Dressing room photos of my parents wearing black Javanese-style wedding outfits, with "cunduk mentul" hairpins for my mom.

Black is a classic color worn by brides and grooms in Javanese wedding, representing earth-related qualities like humility, strength, magnanimity, and wisdom.

For my part, I have always thought that Anderson’s description of Javanese ideas of power was completely indistinguishable from Western conceptions of power: what it is, how it looks, how it is demonstrated, its peculiar relationship to both concentration and debauchery, and its gender fluidity

I semi-seriously believe that you can make sense out of the second Trump administration by imagining that he is a Javanese king, demonstrating power through his wahju (enlightenment/revelation), tédja (glow/radiance), possession of sacred objects, and willingness to showcase his virility...

I can't talk enough about how much I love sape sound from the nostalgic side! It was the sound of my childhood, played at school, bookstore, supermarket, ads, airport. I'm East Javanese but the quintessential sound of East Borneo is also a huge part of my life.

Unexpected France: The Indonesian word for buffet, "prasmanan", came from Betawi "prasmanan", from Dutch "Fransman" (Frenchman), in the sense of "service à la française". For years I thought "prasmanan" came from Sanskrit as a Javanese loanword.

Oh yeah, so many fascinating sounds that have come and gone in past eras.. I don't like the sound of it😆 but I'm fascinated by the rise of Keroncong music in colonial Indonesia for example, Portuguese influenced Hawaiian music sung in Malay in a Dutch colony by Javanese people.. The pop of its time

This LP of Javanese court gamelan, featuring enthralling, interwoven clusters of gongs, xylophones, drums, suling flute, rebab violin and eerie voices, is available for Flac and MP3 download on my blog:

A thousand greetings of warmth and gratitude to the glorious Javanese people! (I'm eating tempeh)

We raised our daughter in NYC. Over the years, her friends spoke English, French, Haitian Creole, Spanish, German, Javanese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Farsi, Hebrew, Klingon (basic), Latin (high achievers) & Ancient Greek (off the charts).
A mayor who speaks Arabic in a commercial does not faze me.

There’s only a few days left to experience the wonder of storytelling through our MA students’ exhibition, Telling Tales, at the Oriental Museum. This family-friendly exhibition will be closing; 9th of November.

Selat Solo
it is actually a type of Javanese style beef salad or stew influenced by European cuisine. The dish consists of braised beef served with boiled vegetables such as carrots, potatoes, green beans, and lettuce, topped with a sweet and other spices.

Two glass paintings of gunungan (mountain-like structure used in wayang performance) by Rastika, an artist from Cirebon, West Java. Glass painting has a long history in Cirebon, with multiple influences in its style like Javanese, Chinese, and Islamic art.

Since the main character, Isah, was raised by a batik artist for Yogyakarta palace, there were several classic Javanese batik motifs mentioned in this book. My favorite is Sekar Jagad ("flowers of the world"); multiple panels containing different patterns, a symbol of ultimate beauty. #Booksky

Reposting. I'm annoyed the art had no alt text.

The multiverse is collapsing. These 4 share one braincell. They're you're only hope.

Choose your fighter:
Tarni: yawkyawk (indigenous freshwater mermaid)
Eila: haltija (Finnish fire spirit)
Matty: baby vampire forever 17
Jenny: trans panther shifter

Or The Bleeding Bone about an ex-horse jockey that joins the merchant marines and helps a burn scarred nun teach Javanese children to read. This was a letterboxd review I repurposed as two skeets because I really didn't have anything else for y'all today. Oh, I had to get rabies shots again.

Some update on this non aesthetic things.
The pic on the left is week 2; true leaves begin to appear.

The pic on the right is week 3; the true leaves are now the same size as dicotyledons.

I can't keep track the plants in the ground after some light storm & my anti fungal rockwool start to decay.

Also happened this year in Yogyakarta where the waiter at the hotel restaurant was like "Let me know if you need anything else... Anything else" and then winked and several days later I looked up "Javanese body language" and came to the conclusion that yes, he was trying to hit it

Okay, I think I'm having too much fun experimenting with Pasawan script. I'm transcribing Paragraph 119 of Babad Tanah Jawi, a traditional Javanese manuscript of local history. Transliteration in Latin alphabet and English translation in alt text.

Wayang kulit is Indonesia’s traditional shadow puppet theater. The term comes from Javanese words for "performance" and "skin", referring to the leather puppets. 🧵⬇️ (1/5)
