I'm a little late to #JanuWrite, but better late than never!

Without revealing too much, as the novel is due to release soon, the big bad's motive focuses on insecurity of inheritance. It's particularly malicious. Biblically inspired by the hypocrisies of Christianity. Interesting stuff!

My mind was shattering, I was having difficulty remembering which parts of my life had been real. It occurred to me that my entire adventure in the afterlife could have been a fabrication. I could have died on my wedding day and gone straight to Hell. There was no Sonny trying to save me. I just invented him as some kind of coping mechanism, to give me hope. That made more sense than me actually being some kind of hero. Who was I to think I could have fought demons and stood up to angels? I was just Bill Baker, not even special enough for a middle name. I was least liked in every friend group and never loved in any relationship. Had Grace been the same? Certainly she had only settled. Like my parents before me, we were destined for a loveless marriage because I was the safe choice. I was average.

Text: “Get up, I need to check that right now.” Aiden rose from the box, maintaining eye contact the entire time. Instead of standing all the way, he scooted one of the other boxes under him, propping his feet on the one he originally sat on. “Aiden, I’m not joking.” “Me either.” Jun stood firm, while Aiden sat, stubborn. As the former gauged whether or not they could tackle Aiden down long enough to lift the box, their eyes fell to the pretzel bag again. It rose and fell. Whatever–or whoever–was inside could still breathe. From the looks of it, the source of breathing was pressed right against the hole. Good sign. They backed away calmly, keeping eyes on Aiden the entire time. “I don’t know what’s gotten into you,” the pretzel bag went into the garbage can, “but I’m not leaving until I search that box.” Finally, they took their seat back at the table. “That kid doesn’t belong here.” “There’s worse places for him than the IF.” Aiden spoke. “I would know.” “That doesn’t make it safe.” “That doesn’t make prison safe, either.” So that’s what bugged him. “How do you know that’s where he’ll end up?” “They were planning to throw you in a cell for less.” Image: Jun and Aiden staring at each other, tense. A surprise after a year of exile.

Katherina bursts through her doorway, and immediately her heart skips several beats. She stands there stunned, unable to act. A moment later she staggers back a step when Princess Lynna tackles her. The princess' body is pressed tightly against her, her arms wrapped around Katherina and squeezing her as hard as she can. Katherina reaches back and fumbles to push the door closed, and the moment it shuts her face presses against Lynna’s chest and her body shudders as relieved sobs of joy flood out of her. For a full minute, the princess stands there with tears tripping down her cheeks as well, holding her trembling knight in her arms. Then their lips meet and lock together, working to enforce a shared desire to never let go again.

Grilled had come prepared. Over-prepared, some might say, but that was the lesson he’d learned living under the watchful eye of Innmaster Shallot. If he wanted to get away with pranks, he had to calculate every move by everyone involved because Shallot was always smarter, stronger, more clever, and more perceptive than he estimated.

He started to run, his boots creating small bright discs of golden light several inches above the floor to avoid standing on the ashen, lifeless dirt, propelling him forward much quicker than he could run under his own speed. Part of the conflict drew close - where an outnumbered and beleaguered squad of Spellknights of Kirinor battled cultists of the wastes - and the light of his staff took on a bright green hue, matching the jade colour of his robes. "**Genesis flame!**" he intoned, casting the light from his staff above the amassed block of waste cultists. The creatures were the lowest of creatures, twisted and malevolent humanoids, covered in crude furs and leathers that knew only the basest of desires. Their existence in the Wastes was a mystery, but for every one cut down, there were three to take its place in the deadlands. The mote of light flew into the air, expanding into lines from each of the cardinal points, expanding 15 feet before spinning and creating a disk of green light in the air. With a motion of his staff, the disk flew down to the floor, surrounding a group of the creatures before bursting upwards with brilliant jade flames. There was no time for noise as they were consumed by the eruption, leaving naught but their weapons and a patch of grass and life in the ashen ground of the wastes. The patch of life didn't last long, and whatever had long consumed all life from the Wastes took the small patch of magical life for its own - grass and flowers withering to dust in seconds. The spell was enough to turn the tide though - distracted by the vaporisation of some of their allies, and a renewed assault from the Spellknights - this group of cultists fell back, staring and cursing at the wizard in fear, even as he looped the gem on his staff above his head again, this time the gem filling with an azure glow.

For Ka'rah in particular, hmm. Never stop posting, never give up a fight, never go to war without looking her best, in case she dies and has to meet the gods.

Seff has a hard time imagining things she has rarely or never had, including compliments or people saying she's loved. She would probably wish and hope for Drohim to say he understands and accepts if she doesn't want to follow in his footsteps - but that's a hell of a long shot.

During their magic training, Mireia is put under a Truth Spell, & Kena takes advantage of it to make her admit things she doesn't want to.

He thinks it's funny till HE's the one forced to tell the truth, and M humiliates him for revenge. They both feel bad & apologize afterward. ❤️
“What do you really think of me, Mireia?” Kena asked. “Sun Father, please—!” Sister La’axoati begged. “At the moment?” Mireia growled. “I think I’m extremely angry at you.” “I don’t mean at the moment,” he said. “You know that’s not what I meant. What do you think of me? Tell me the truth.” “I think you’re—” She tried to stop herself, though honestly she had no idea what she was about to say. “I think you’re… strange, and—clever, and cute, and you make me uncomfortable sometimes.” She clasped her hand over her mouth again, face blazing. Kena’s own mouth had fallen open. “You think I’m cute?” “Ye—nnnn…” She tried hard to fight it, but the truth was rising up in her like vomit. “Nn—y—you have pretty eyes, and I like your curls.” She wished she could die. Kena was absolutely beaming, and the acolytes were both lost in a fit of helpless giggles. “Could we stop now, please?” he asked in a small voice. “Ata, I think that’s a good—” Sister La’axoati said. “What do you really think of me, Kena?” Mireia could see he was exhausted and embarrassed, but she wasn’t ready to stop. “I think you’re… beautiful,” he said. “And frustrating. And I’m scared of you most of the time.” “Scared of me? Why?” “Because you know exactly what you want, and I haven’t a clue what I’m doing. And because—I want you to like me, but I’m afraid you can see how useless I am every time you look at me.” Mireia was shocked. Suddenly this had become much less fun than before. “I don’t think you’re useless,” she told him gently. “And you know, I don’t really know what I’m doing either. I always thought you did.” Kena let out a heavy breath. “I’m sorry,” she murmured. “I shouldn’t have asked you all those questions.” “I’m sorry too, I’m the one who started it. Will you forgive me?” “If you’ll forgive me.” “Well, now,” Sister La’axoati broke in again in a forced lighthearted tone. “That’s very nice. Forgiveness is so important, ona? So glad we could, ah—have this little moment together.”

A snippet from my WIP, The Ghosts of Rapture, that reads as follows: Jacob regarded her with a lopsided grin. “You better do this right or she’s going to be so mad at you. Can you imagine getting yelled at by the ghost of your ancestor after all this?” He wrinkled his face up in an approximation of grandma rage and wagged his finger at her. “I am very disappointed in you, young lady! You have really let everyone down!” “Why is Clara an old woman? I assume, like Eli, a ghost can return in a preferred form.” “Maybe she was really excited to be an old woman. You ever thought about that? She was super into the whole grandma vibe and went with it even into the afterlife. Maybe she’ll show up like one of the witches in Macbeth and start waving creepy 19th century medical cures at you.” Jacob waved his hands and made spooky noises like in the old cartoons. “I’m here to replace your blood with milk and give you cocaine for tooth ache!” Will snorted trying to hold in her laughter. “Milk? No fucking way, man.” “Oh yeah. Absolutely fucking way, man. Look it up when we finally get out of this place. Which I guess... is tomorrow?” Jacob’s shoulders dropped in shock as his gaze lengthened into the distance. “My God, it’s actually tomorrow we’re supposed to leave this place? How in the hell are we supposed to get everything done?” The prompts for Januwrite. Background is a pastel space scene, focused on Saturn. Prompts are in white with multi-color highlights. Day four is "Share a moment where a side character steals the spotlight."

The important relationship in SoM is the bonds of siblings or even friendship. It matters because there is a lot of betrayal in the story. They wonder who they could trust. Why not the ones that's been with you for years and years? They all been through a lot together

The closed bisexual love triangle in my books is messy to say the least 😂
“I . . .” I groan softly, pressing the heels of my palms into my eyes until I see stars. I take a deep breath to gather my courage and say the words I am dreading before I can get cold feet. “Saif knows we slept together.” The smallest self-satisfied smile lifts one corner of Diego’s mouth as he looks at Saif. I frown at him. “And I told her I’m not angry with her,” Saif says curtly. “I fully expected you to swoop in and take advantage of her while she was hurting. That’s what you’re best at.” Diego just smirks sardonically at him. “Don’t worry, querido, I helped her stop hurting three times that night.” If Saif had Dhabiha on him, he might have actually tried to impale Diego with it through the bars, but luckily, I’m not the only one missing my weapon.
