As for JSF not being the most senior apostle, two of Brigham Young's sons had more seniority, John Willard Young and Brigham Young Jr. They were ordained as apostles by their father when 11 and 27 respectively - but JW never was part of the Quorum of the 12 and BYjr entered the Quorum after JSF.

- concurrency
The original JSF program got its start with a USAF program to replace F-16s and a USN program to replace F/A-18s; combining these wasn't the worst idea post-Cold War

yeah, I (and a lot of others) can make all sorts of rational cases for why ASTOVL->CALF should have been kept fenced off from JAST and what became JSF, but it wasn't in the cards fiscally or politically, and telling the USMC to eat shit on STOVL (however justified) also wasn't politically feasible
