I duck back and a few seconds later Mikes follows, giving me a bone shattering hug. “Good to see you, kid! Glad to see you still know the way here.” I hug him back, feeling the tension leaving my body. “Sorry I’ve been neglecting you lately.” I mumble into his shoulder. I had no idea how much I needed his comfort, so I hold on to it a bit longer. He doesn't seem to mind. He kisses my temple before releasing me.

"I pull out the hair dryer from the bottom drawer below the basin and get to fixing my hair first. Once I’m satisfied with the tousled look I was going for, I pad into my bedroom. I opt for a simple black outfit of jeans, a ripped shirt, trainers and my favorite leather jacket. I’m not really in the mood for anything extravagant, so this should do. For a brief moment I imagine Ben’s appreciative eyes on me and I smile. Being admired does well for my ego, however imaginary."

After my little outing at the temple, I headed to our practice place so Avery could fuss over me to his heart’s content. I didn't tell him where I was - the ruin held the same memories for him as that's where we met, and there was no need to drag him with me into the abyss. He was the only one I let know why I went into a hermit mode so I didn't have to explain again. He just wanted to know if I was okay. I stayed to jam for a while, the music lifting my mood instantly.

I help the guys put away their gear as we are short of hands - as usual - and I don’t mind jumping in every once in a while. By this point, Broken Luck has become a permanent fixture in Pandamonium, whether they play or not. Sometimes he catches me watching him, but I can never tell what is going on behind those dark velvet eyes. Sometimes we bump into each other, and I can’t help wondering how it might taste like to lick the beads of perspiration off his skin. Focus on your damn job, Kingsley, for fuck’s sake.

I shake my head. I need a distraction. And that’s when I notice Ben standing by the entrance, his hands in his pockets, shuffling his feet nervously. His chocolate brown hair is windswept, like he really just got out of bed. My eyes linger on his lips for a moment too long, remembering our first, hungry kiss. I wouldn’t mind tasting them again. He is similarly dressed to me, just in a more simple and straightforward fashion. I suppose I have enough extravagance for the both of us.

“Yes. Here, take this as a token of my promise and your allegation to me.” I see a familiar metallic glint in the air and reach for it out of reflex. On my palm lies a small feather made of some kind of metal of iridescent colors, same as the line around my finger. The design is intricate, fine like a lattice, with twisted lines and geometric shapes crisscrossing over it. I’ve never seen anything like it. I pocket the feather and make a mental note to get a chain so I could wear it as a necklace. “Alright, “ I say, “tell me what I should do.”

“Yeah. I'm fine.” I say, feeling anything but. Memories start trickling back as I sit up on the concrete. We are outside of a dorm building, beer cans lying around me. We just celebrated playing our first gig as Broken Luck with some drinks we got as payment. If you can call playing for a roomful of drunk college kids that. Still. Everyone has to start somewhere and from the looks on the faces around us, we did quite well. We were laughing about some stupid shit when it happened.

I don't have comply in my WIP so I went for obey. Gigi is one of my fav side characters to write which is why she is getting a whole chapter with Ben 😅 If you remember my tears snip, this is the tattoo that made Ben cry as well.

"Ah. A couple of weeks ago. Damien designed it." I shift my eyes, reaching for the next chair, not wanting to talk about him. The last thing I needed was my little sister putting her nose into my love life. "Ooh. Now I understand everything. Come here and show it to me! And shame on you for not telling me about it." I obey and walk over to the bar, sliding on a stool next to her, placing my arm on the countertop. I hear her breath catching and know she understands. I don't have to look at her to be sure she has tears in her eyes. She slids her fingers in my hand, squeezing it.

"When I arrive at the studio and walk into the tiny changing room, his broad smile is a relief to see amidst all the anxiety induced panic. We hug and shake hands then he walks me over to the rack of clothes he picked for me. Working with a stylist who had known you for a long time has the advantage of not needing to make any inputs. He gave me more clothes and tips than I can count, and I probably owe ninety percent of my wardrobe to his influence anyway."

He probably notices my nervousness, because he politely refuses, coming up with an excuse. I’m disappointed. But he squeezes my shoulder as he leaves, and that gives me hope. And a tingling feeling, like a tiny electric current went through me where we touched. “So that was the famous Damien, huh? He’s got a nice ass, I got to give him that.” For the third time that morning, I’m in danger of choking on something. Though, she is not wrong. “Yep.” I squeak, then clear my throat. Get yourself together! Gigi gives me a weird look but then goes on.

I'm about to put my phone down when I notice the unread messages from Benji. I've been avoiding him since our last gig as I still haven't figured out what I should say to him. So I do what I do best - leave his query about my wellbeing unanswered and go get ready for a long and tiring day. As it’s been only a couple of days since [redacted], my people-reading abilities are depleted, so I shouldn’t worry that much about being surrounded with people, making it a lot more easy to keep my mind under control. I still don’t look forward to the experience though, but as we recently got a recording deal and we grow in popularity, we need to push ourselves in front of people. A lot depends on the success of our debut album, and whatever my personal feelings may be, I want the best for Calidron.

The audience around me goes wild, which means the show is about to end. I know Broken Luck’s set by heart, and sure enough, the first notes of Unresistible cuts through the air. I groan. This song always cuts deep and I need all my willpower not to look at the stage unless I wish to become a drooling fool. If Damien ever sang that song for me in private, it would make me come undone. I hope he won’t. I wish he would.

I stuff my wallet and my phone - which I still haven’t checked, I figure whoever wants to get hold of me can wait another day - into my pockets and leave the flat, with my earphones on. The streets are busy, but not too much. It’s early evening, the afternoon rush is over and the night revelers aren’t out yet, and it feels like Calidron is holding its breath. Not in an oppressive way, more like in anticipation of what the people will get up to next. The last thing I want is to run into anyone I know, so I head the opposite way from Pandamonium, and duck into the back alleys as soon as I can. I know the city like the back of my hand. But then, in my line of work, that’s kind of a given.

“I think the main thing with our lyrics is that we are unapologetically us. We are lucky that our label gave us free reign when it comes to the lyrics, so we don’t feel pressured to conform. We are rockers. We are rebels. We want people to know it’s okay to be different, it’s okay to want to be free. It’s okay to speak up against the system. It’s okay to feel lost, alone, betrayed, hurt. It’s okay to walk away and ask for help no matter how hard it might seem.” I say, which is probably more than I talked all day. But this is important to me, as I write all my lyrics based on my own experiences. And I have more than some at my age.

Sometimes I still jerk awake at night, when I dream about those winter nights when I lay on the cold floor in the bone-chilling room, blanketed by some dirty, foul-smelling rags, not knowing if I’ll wake up the next day. If someone knows how it feels to hopelessly struggle to survive, to reach out your hand for help which never comes, it’s me. When you feel it would be easier to just let the world bring you down and bury you when there is no reason to fight on.

A few hours pass and I start to feel like I'm falling apart. Everything is too much. The buzzing in my head is almost unbearable, even though the crowd thinned considerably. Most of the kids went home, only the groupies, the band, and a few friends remain. I glance at the other end of the room where Benji helps out at the bar. He cleans glasses and puts away empty bottles while Wendy treats the customers. Watching them feels like watching a pair of dancers going through a routine that comes as naturally as breathing. I consider going and talking to him, or just touch him, but I know it's better for both of us if I keep my distance. I already let him get too close and I can't afford to do that. Maybe it’s time we ended things between us. I need a distraction. And fresh air. So I sneak out on the back door, after grabbing my bag from our changing room. I don't say goodbye, the guys already know me by now. With any luck, they'll think I left with one of the girls. There certainly were a few tonight who wouldn't be against the idea.

Mikes’ studio was lit when I arrived, the sound of a whirring tattoo machine greeting me, accompanied by the ding of the doorbell. “I'm almost done, can you put the food in the restroom for me?” The man with his wide back to me called without looking up. He’s been working on a young woman's calf from what I could tell, some kind of flower motif.

A cool hand on the nape of my neck makes me stir and try to sort through the pain coming from the iridescent line around my finger I had since that day. The last dregs of the memory vivid behind my eyelids. The echo of the Voice still ringing in my ears but the words are different now. “Awake and serve! Heed my voice, be the peace to those who ask for it.” I clutch my head, feeling like it might split at any moment. The voice is gone, leaving nothing but confusion at its wake.

To clear the cobwebs in my brain, I decide that I need a shower. Glimpsing myself in the bathroom mirror, I probably needed that for days. I wonder how Ben could stand the sight of me - it’s been a long time since I let myself get so unkempt. I pull the neck of my shirt up to my nose to sniff it and almost gag. Fucking hell, Ben must be a saint to let me get so close to him while also smelling like a trashbin left on the sun for days.

Xinthy, being good to their word, somehow got Blake roped into the photoshoot with Muse. As an up and coming stylist, he wasn't all that well known yet and I have no idea how Xin managed to make them agree as Muse most likely had their trusted team of professionals. But I'm not complaining as Blake is a good friend of mine and as he is already aware of my…preferences, he can make sure I never have to deal with a lot of people at once.
