#Infomocracy
SF: the White Space novels by Elizabeth Bear, especially Machine; the Midsolar Murders series by Mur Lafferty; the Infomocracy series and the Mossa and Pleiti series by Malka Older (very different vibes from each other, both excellent series)

I mean this was right below that on my timeline so: is 60 minutes a real news show? I guess not. Where does one find a real news show/paper, in real time? #Infomocracy

"Factchecking Trump on '60 Minutes'"

In today's 'First Draft' morning newsletter from Zeteo, I counted and debunked at least *17 obvious, brazen lies* that the president told CBS's Norah O'Donnell, and that she just let slide:

Mehdi debunks the president's lies, unpacks the failure of our mainstream media, and has the latest from Gaza, as well as Trump's 'Great Gatsby'-esque Halloween party.

1) paywalls
more importantly 2) if I see eg NYT publishing, idk, "man bites dog", yes prob true. But do I trust their extensive framing on what dog did to provoke it & what that means for dog-owners in the 5 boroughs? no I don't, which leads back to not paying to get through the paywall

I feel one million years old here, but we do actually have a pretty reliable way of knowing what news is true. Did a real newspaper publish it? Then probably yes. Can’t find it in a real newspaper? Maybe not.
A large majority of U.S. adults now get news digitally, but nondigital news consumers are less likely to say they extremely often or often encounter inaccurate news.

Those who control the process of disinformation must have access to information. Those who manipulate information rule the world.

Quasi-spoiler for Infomocracy (2016) but one of the characters stabs another one when the internet goes down and I really don’t want to live like that.

the democratic party’s basic problem is it has almost no control over how its message reaches the ears of voters, especially outside of presidential election years. but rather than devote serious time, attention and cash to that problem its consultants and pundits want to fight factional battles

Incidentally, one of my favorite books to recommend these days is Malka Older's "Infomocracy." It's part one of a series!

I'd love to teach it one day.
Trump: "AI is based on information. I hope they're right about information. I don't know. You've gotta make a lot of money to-- there's gotta be a lot of information out there, but that seems to be pretty hot. We're leading the world on information on AI."

he's not "predicting" it, he's expressing his selfish vision of nobody doing anything he doesn't want (not that we should care what any of these comemierdas predict anyway, but since some people do, sub-heads should be clear). Also who's going to monitor all this surveillance? #Infomocracy
Larry Ellison envisions a surveillance state in which techbros rule. '“Citizens will be on their best behavior, because we’re constantly recording and reporting everything that is going on,” Ellison said in an hour-long Q&A during Oracle’s Financial Analyst Meeting last week.'

So, so many, but I will never stop mentioning and recommending Malka Older's Centenal Cycle: Infomocracy, Null States, and State Tectonics.

Shame on Downing Street for going along with this. So much for being committed to a free press

if you haven't read Infomocracy by @older.bsky.social let's just say it's a timely work of speculative fiction
Morning. ☕️

ICYMI: Republicans in Congress are simultaneously condemning and fueling violent political rhetoric in the aftermath of Charlie Kirk's killing.

They're just using different social media accounts to send different messages. www.huffpost.com/entry/republ...

Italy was a clear warning sign 25 years ago. Media consolidation is deadly to democracy.
90% of the UK newspaper market is controlled by three companies: DMG (Daily Mail et al), News UK (Murdoch), and Reach (the Mirror, Express). This also translates to a huge share (~40%) of online reach.

Johnson: "Do not believe the lies the Democrat Party has said. We had their ads taken down. They were running ads around the country in swing districts trying to convince people Republicans are going to 'gut Medicaid.' It's just simply not true & that's why their ads & billboards had to come down"

Redbubble is upping their fees and the explanation sounds very ai-ish and enshittifying, so I'm thinking it might be time to retire my Infomocracy account there. If you want "I Vote for Policy1st" or Team Mishima gear, now would be a time to grab it, I guess.
