I've been asked a few times here and elsewhere if I remember a winter off to this bad of a start.

A couple weeks ago, I said probably.

We are now in "no" territory.

LONG THREAD: My reporting on the insurance crisis has forced me to rethink some of my assumptions about where the most serious risk lies when it comes to wildfires that result in home loss. Like many, I assumed the phenomenon was most heavily concentrated in or near wooded areas. Think Paradise, CA

Stopped by the Cramer Fire 2003 memorial at Indianola (former helibase) #IdahoFire

just across the river is a makeshift memorial, the Chinook crash site, in which two pilots were killed on the Moose Fire a few years ago.

I spent a lot of time flying in & out of Indy back in the day...

There have been numerous fires in Central Idaho over the past 30 years that 'all the kings horses and all the kings men' couldn't stop...

Clear Creek (2000) was my first. Had almost 10k people assigned, #1 priority in the nation, and it was still putting up 8 mile runs.

An important idea I've heard from @amonthei.bsky.social is "unsuppressability." Many are possessed of the VERY mistaken notion that all wildfires CAN BE suppressed. But 4 a select few, there is no technology on Earth that can stop them. Humility is part of the path out of the wildfire crisis.

As an air ambulance pilot, we seldom know much about a patient's condition or who they are. We have one job, get them safely to where they need to go. And after, no idea how it turned out. But this guy was in the news and I realized immediately who he was. It's fantastic to see him looking so good!

Justin Shaw suffered a traumatic brain injury when a burning tree struck him in August 2024. After rehabilitation in Nebraska, he's returning to Idaho on Monday.

At face value this is great. Whether or not it'll be done well..... My confidence isn't high.

Senators propose bill to require PPE for wildland firefighters, but some have reservations
Former and current federal firefighters say they welcome the proposed changes but worry that the wrong respirator or mask could make an already strenuous job more difficult.

The FAA has expanded the emergency AD to ground the DC-10 (and all variants) which the MD-11 was based.

By my read this would include the four-ish Very Large Air Tankers (VLAT) in operation that are based on the DC-10, like Tanker 910 in this photo. #IdahoFire

Moving responsibility for Wildland fires on Idaho Department of Lands land to the office of emergency management is one of the dumber things I've heard.
#IdahoFire
The ideas also include:
-Merging the Department of Finance and into the Department of Insurance.
-Resizing the Department of Commerce and moving to an Idaho emphasis.
-Moving wildfire responsibilities away from the Department of Lands and giving them to the Office of Emergency Management. #idleg
Under “Legislature ideas,” the list included, among other proposals:

-Eliminating the Idaho Board of Tax Appeals.
-Merging or eliminating the Idaho Commission on Libraries.
-Merging or eliminating the Idaho Commission on Hispanic Affairs.
-Merging or eliminating the Idaho Commission on the Arts.

If any Boise region folks want to help IDF&G with post-fire habitat restoration, here are some upcoming opportunities. Message me for details.

Yep. And there are probably a dozen smouldering trees in that area that won't spread and will never be detected. The one at Banks just happened to be next to a busy highway so it got reported. It wasn't a threat either way.

#IdahoFire
There was just a wee bit of lightning activity over the 55 corridor yesterday.

I'm assuming it's a single tree smouldering from a lightning strike yesterday. It ain't going anywhere...

Alright...

I've seen enough.

This is a season ending event for at least 90% of the state.

The 2025 #IdahoFire season is over.

What a weird season it was... We got lucky... A lot.

But also, huge kudos to our Initial Attack crews who managed to hold all but a few fires.

See ya next year.

All but the final nail in the coffin of the 2025 #IdahoFire season.

I'm really hoping this weekend drives that last nail with a "season ending event"

I know we're done, but I want to be *that* done.
October 11, 2025 at 8:45 PM
I've already had two people msg/call this morning to ask if this cold front & rain are a "season ending event"

I'd love to think that. But... no.

98.5% sure we won't see a large fire incident in timber, but we're not *quite* to season ending conditions.

Soon, I hope.

#IdahoFire
It was such a relief that we managed to get through fire season. We only had a week of smoke, which isn't bad in the Payette National Forest.

Looking at the last 48-72 hours, all VIIRS/MODIS Satellite fire detections in the state of Idaho are from Agricultural or Industrial sources. No *detected* #IdahoFire activity.
October 2, 2025 at 5:29 PM
For the record, those in power will say that Wildland firefighting won't be affected by a government shutdown.

As a former Wildland fire guy who went through a few government shutdowns, I can assure you that is absolute bullshit.

#IdahoFire Lake Creek Fire
This went pretty much like I said last night / this morning. As we're wrapping up today's burn period, I see no further threat from this fire. Last estimate is still 300 acres, crews still working it on the ground, but it isn't going anywhere.

There are thunderstorms possible today ahead of a slow moving cold front--approaching cold fronts are problematic for fighting fire as they often bring erratic/gusty winds and thunderstorms. On the back side of that front we have cooler weather and widespread rain. #IdahoFire
