Over the years I've learned some things about the Art that is spelled with a capital A, not the assembly line, small-a art of the sort they hang on the walls of this crap hotel. The most important thing to remember is that capital-A Art is worth what somebody is willing to pay for it, and some people will go to great lengths to own it. Unscrupulous people have been known to sell forgeries of their Art in order to make money on it while also hoarding the real thing. A strange fetish, those subterranean locked rooms with their Warhol or their O'Keeffe or their Rembrandt. Audience of one. The bottom line is that capital-A Art is only for the people who can afford it, the ones who need somebody like me to run things for them, make sure their flowers are fresh, their floors so clean they could eat off them, their refrigerator arranged in ordered rows. Whatever their kink, I'm their girl.

She takes in Sugar's leather pants. "You look different, Danny." Then she shrugs, pastes a fake smile on her face. "I don't go by Cal anymore," she says. I tell her nobody calls me Danny but her. She fiddles with those rings. "So why are you here? Tonight." I could tell her the truth, but instead I say it must be a coincidence, that I spotted her earlier but I wasn't sure it was her until now. Her upper lip curls. "It's mad that you're standing here in front of me," she says, giving me this shoulder hug and air kissing both my cheeks. She taps her phone awake and says she has to go. She's a little manic, searching in her handbag for something. "Who's the guy?" I say. "It's not your husband." She pauses with the mint she'd been searching for held between her fingers, then pops it into her mouth, coming close enough that I can smell the minty freshness of her breath. Her mouth is slightly open. Those vampire teeth peek out from behind her top lip. "I want to see you again, but I can't do this right now. Get an encrypted phone number and text it to me here." Cal scribbles a string of numbers on a card and presses it into my hand "Tomorrow."

"Danvers!" Alice called out. "Come, sit." I had sought out the tranquility of a pristine blue-sky day, without a whisper of wind, to think. I didn't want to believe I was out of my depth. Admitting that would be impossible. Besides, who would I tell? Vernon? He'd lose faith in me, maybe even fire me. But ever since Sugar had gotten the part in Westerfield's movie, every day felt like my first day on the job. Every day brought another pop quiz in a subject I hadn't known I should be studying for. My limits--those all-important boundaries--were unknowable. I regularly frightened myself.

Naturally Paul darling and his film were different. The script was raw. And real. And sexy. It pushed the boundaries and was guaranteed to create a shock to the system when it came out. I said it sounded like the kind of film her parents had made in their day. But I regretted bringing them up, because her face got sad and her eyes watered. She looked away, leaned her elbows on the railing. "Paul's nothing like Artie," she said in this dead voice. It wasn't clear if she was telling that to me or herself. Two teenage kids with skateboards had parked themselves against the wall opposite us. They stared rudely, so I assumed they had recognized her. In a loud voice Sugar asked them what (the fuck) they were looking at. The smaller, dark-haired kid with a backward cap said, "I know who you are," and she said, "Oh yeah?" and walked over to them, hands on her hips. "Who am I?" she said. I stepped forward, this involuntary reaction. Sugar was a magnet for trouble--a trespasser like me--and I was ready to defend her. But her fight fizzled when the dark-haired kid said, "Don't get your panties in a twist, grandma." Then the other one, with streaky blond hair like a young lan, called her a nepo-baby bitch. So she said, "Fuck you," and they laughed at her. It was a painful exit.

Vernon and I retreated to the hall. "What do you really think of the dress?" he smirked. I said it was an interesting choice and he laughed because he knew I was lying. "You know who all this is for," he said. "She's in a tizzy because it's Paul Westerfield who's auditioning her." I was surprised. I hadn't heard that name in years. Paul Westerfield had made a lot of movies in the eighties and nineties, with thin plots and derivative psychological thriller elements that audiences seemed to love and critics loved to hate. "You know who he is?" Vernon said I said, "Well, he's famous, isn't he?" "Yeah," Vernon said. "A famous hack." He said it as if he was deeply disturbed that hacks were often famous and well rewarded in the film business. "Haven't you seen the movies?"

Scooter slyly asked us what we'd been doing in there, and lan simpered a little and put his arm around my waist, pulling me to him. The blue-eyed woman looked completely bored with all of us. Scooter wagged his head at me. "I hear you want to see my Krasner," The blue-eyed woman looked at Scooter and said, "Who the fuck is she anyway? What are her goddamn credentials?" Scooter gave me a shamefaced smile. "This is my wife, Tippy." I told him, smiling, that we'd met earlier, but Tippy wouldn't look at or acknowledge me. She was too busy murdering her husband with a focused glare that animated her face in a strangely attractive way. "Why should we trust her?" Tippy snapped. "We don't know anything about her." Ian tried to step in to save the situation, and that's how I knew they had history because Tippy turned on him, calling him a crook and a liar, insults he accepted stoically. Then Scooter stepped in and was sharp with Tippy and she stalked away, throwing a "Fuck you, Scooter" over her shoulder and a shouted "And fuck you too, Carter!"

When the seamstress was finished, Hadley downed the last of the complimentary champagne and said she needed a smoke, so I stood up to leave and wait outside, but Cal ordered me to stay. When we were alone, she said, "Do you envy me?" I told her no. She asked me why, so I told her because she didn't seem happy. "I'm happy," she said with a scowl that took over her whole face. "Why wouldn't I be happy?" She couldn't get out of that dress and back into her street clothes fast enough. I asked if I should go ahead and order the car, and she told me she was doing downtown Happy Hour with Hadley. When I pointed out that Happy Hour was at least two hours in the future she said, "You're lucky, Marie. You can be who you are." I told her my friends call me Danny.

We bypassed the observatory itself-too many gawkers—and went up the outside stairs to the observation decks. Gesturing like she owned the view of volcanic hills, she said, "Here you go, Danny." I looked out at a layer of brownish smog hanging over the urban sprawl below. I mean, if you've never been there, it isn't unlike being on the observation deck at the Empire State Building. Or on the 108th floor of the Strat in Vegas. You're above it all. And down there the ants scurry and toil. But let's be honest. From that distance, that HOLLYWOOD sign looks disappointingly insignificant set up on its ridge. It's the view of the city and beyond that draws the eye. I said as much to Sugar, and she said the best way to see the sign was up close, to hike up into the hills at night, but there were mountain lions and coyotes up there. My opinion was that seeing the sign up close wouldn't be worth the risk of being mauled by a mountain lion, and Hollywood was a concept not a word on a hill. She said I was funny, and I said I was glad that I could amuse her. Neither of us were that interested in the view once we'd seen it, so we just stood there and bantered for a while, her telling me stories about what a shitshow the film business was. How it was a cesspool of ego and testosterone. How the least talented people always seemed to rise to the top. How people like her got discounted because of their name. Naturally Paul darling and his film were different. The script was raw. And real. And sexy. It pushed the boundaries and was guaranteed to create a shock to the system when it came out.

"Get Armen to drive you," I said to her retreating back. She waved a hand. "No, thanks. I don't trust foreigners." I went outside, but Vernon had already left poolside. I wouldn't have found him except that I spotted the glowing end of a cigarette in the kitchen garden. He was sitting on the stone wall, smoking and scowling at the sky. I said I didn't know he smoked and he said, "I don't." Then he said he'd bummed one from Joey Alter. I guess I sounded like I didn't believe him because he got all haughty and told me hed bummed cigarettes from dukes and a few baronesses. Joey Alter wasn't that special. "That little prick is too pretty, don't you think?" Vernon said, to which I replied, "Well, he's certainly little," and that made him laugh. I waited while he smoked the cigarette down to the filter. We watched people mingling outside on the pool deck, clutching their gift bag giveaways, their raised, excited voices those of people who've had too much to drink and a feast of scandalous speculation. With a sigh Vernon flicked the butt, sparks flying, into the raised bed where it landed among the tomato plants. He said, "I didn't get you any perfume, but I did save you a Longines. If you want to pawn it, you could probably get seven-fifty for it. Just so you know, I did get bulk pricing in the end." I got up to retrieve his cigarette butt, squashed it, and put it on the wall between us, Vernon's baleful gaze following my every move. I said, "You wouldn't want to start a fire, would you?" "I don't know ... Maybe I would," Vernon said. "I would've loved to see the look on the trust manager's face when she told that pompous bastard what the money was for. Larry likes to act like it's his money." "So do you," I pointed out. "Well, I've worked a helluva lot harder to earn it than he has," Vernon said without any sense of irony. He tutted. "Larry must be shitting bricks that she's spending it on a fucking pipe dream movie project."
