That was mostly for passenger traffic in Manhattan. Freight and switching operations held out until the 1926 Kaufman Act deadline. Even so, the LIRR bent the rules, as their G5’s as far west as Long Island City

Alarmingly high levels of #Plutonium-239 have been detected at former #HuntersPoint Shipyard, prompting #SanFranciscoDPH to warn #Bayview community partners about the threat & press the #USNavy for answers about its ongoing cleanup of the site.

Here's a fun thought experiment: if you were going to close any subway stations in New York (or honestly anywhere) to speed service, what would they be?

I might argue for Hunterspoint Ave on the 7. So close to Vernon-Jackson, the line is so busy, and there is only limited LIRR service.

The image on the left was the official LIRR station page image for Hunterspoint Avenue until they moved everything to the new website (which doesn't have photos).

Photo on the right is skyline in 2021.

Really encapsulates how aloof MTA has been to city's growth www.thelirrtoday.com/2023/03/lirr...

- New station at Long Island City or Hunterspoint Ave for Penn station bound trains
- Stagger tracks into two levels to increase platform size
- Overhead electrify to Ronkonkoma
- Combine NJT and LIRR into one service
- Demolish Madison square garden, and move it to Madison square (or elsewhere)

I wonder if people can fully understand what this station is, or what trains stop here. The entrance is very nondescript, and all the signage is vandalized! I imagine only people in the know would ever encounter this. #trains #photography

Depending on where you are starting from at GCT (e.g. the Lexington Avenue Line platforms at Grand Central), it's actually faster to get to the LIRR platforms at **HUNTERSPOINT AVENUE** than the far end of the caverns at GCT!

Went back to double check something, and I realized it's odd that this map shows LIC and Hunterspoint being disconnected from *each other*. Maybe the LIRR was terminating trains at Hunterspoint in that era? 🤔

Regardless, LIC was always a terminal, so it never had a route to NYP.
This 1972-vintage map correctly shows LIC and Hunterspoint Ave being disconnected from the line to NYP. Amusingly, the NY Connecting RR (then PC and Amtrak) is omitted entirely - which would make sense since this is a "commuter" map, except Amtrak is shown in every other direction.

Signage of the NYC commuter rail systems within the city itself can be spotty. I've got a couple photos to show this off but here's a good example of an old sign left in neglect at Hunterspoint Avenue. These lightly served stations within the city are often neglected. #trains #photography

Hope everyone is having a nice first day of the New Year! I visited Hunterspoint Avenue a while back, saw this LIRR diesel train waiting to depart. This area is really interesting, as these tracks really contain the Long Island City development. #trains #photography

7 trains are running with delays in both directions after we removed a train in need of repair from service at 34 St-Hudson Yards.

To alleviate track congestion, some Manhattan-bound 7 trains turned for Main St-bound service at Queensboro Plaza and Hunterspoint Ave.
