I am disappointed that no Shore Larks have been viewable at Holkham Gap this winter, but there is still time! Fortunately, there has been a small group reported on Pakefield Beach, Suffolk, near the Coastwatch site. Access is tricky but I did spot five birds today. 1/2

Yesterday me, the dog and @optimisey spent the day at Holkham beach. The weather was glorious, the dog was delirious and we finished up the adventure with fish and chips! Food for the soul 💙

Midnight in a Manger

In the glow of a medieval night, long before flashy pageantry, someone painted a Nativity that feels very alive. Here, the Holy Family is rendered not in the pale homogeneity of later European convention but in rich, varied tones. 🧶

A comparison of Hume’s Leaf Warbler (Wells Woods), left, and Yellow-browed Warbler (Holkham), right, from the last two days. Subtle but distinctive differences between these two similar Phylloscopus species supported by their quite different calls. #NorfolkBirding

Hume’s Leaf Warbler is a variable bird. The 3 currently inhabiting Holkham NNR all look different. The two I found on 16th: a grey/greenish rather scruffy bird (top left), & a buff/cream clean bird (top right) & Ash Saunders’ Wells bird is grey with contrasting green secondary edges #NorfolkBirding

Ouch, not good. Hope it mends quickly. I'm OK thanks, i don't seem to find the time for taking the camera out so mainly phone pics. I've been retired for 2 years but now growing cut flowers and dried and it's manic 😂 just went and helped florists set up a room at holkham hall for their Xmas tours 🎄

What's interesting is these shepherds are "every man" w/ a bit of humor. Caught off guard they're wide-eyed & booted, sort of in their "huh, what's happening?" stance.

This colorway captures the lively contrast: a striped poinsettia red recalls the warmth of hearths, cloaks, & firelit cheeks;

In illuminated mss, shepherds are often the first witnesses to wonder, they're caught mid-gesture as celestial light breaks across winter fields. In this image their garments, streaked with mineral blues, cool greens, and flashes of red, glow against soft hillside pastures.

Peppermint Shepherds

Inspired by a vivid shepherd scene from the Holkham 14th-century bible picture book (British Library, Add. MS 47682) Peppermint Shepherds blends holiday brightness w/ rustic pastoral charm. 🧶

11/ Lastly it's good to see that the Holkham Estate have now joined the National Estate for Nature group - where the brilliant @jakefiennes.bsky.social works his magic over 25,000 acres of Norfolk.

That means 3 large private estates are now members - and hopefully more will join in future.

Local to me would be Holkham. Other than that, Fesdu island in the Maldives. That may change, though, when I go to NZ in January. 😁😁😁
