A key paper on this is at https://doi.org/10.2305/IUCN.CH.2019.02.en which discusses new techniques for defining species boundaries and how they uncover cryptic diversity in herpetofauna.

Ignore this if I’m stating the obvious. (Past spoiler concerns for this puzzle I’d say). Herpetofauna has to do w reptiles and amphibians. The start of each word applied to this category. I don’t know if I can remember them all. NEWT ON. ADDER ALL. TOAD Y. I can’t remember the fourth one.

TIL herpetofauna is a thing

Herps = reptiles/amphibians. Fauna = animals in a given region. Therefore, herpetofauna = reptiles/amphibians in a given region. It's not that difficult. Please stop contributing to the ignorance of Americans. It's already bad enough as it is.
