#HTDAAB
Their last truly great album, IMHO.

HTDAAB was a good one too, but it doesn't touch this one.

Alright for the rundown! How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb is a spinoff of the highly popular JJBA Fanfic Streetlight Pursuit.

HTDAAB follows Georg A. Paisley, an SLP Minor Villain, who takes the main spotlight in search of the madman who murdered his beloved wife Mirian.

I made a list back in December 2004, in the month after HTDAAB was released (on my birthday, in fact). I did put it online, elsewhere, then, but that's long gone. First shared with cousins that Christmas Eve. This is that list, exactly as it was then...

…to buy. I bought all the others I hadn’t had in the wake of HTDAAB.

I was a major U2 fan from when I was 13 until around 27. After HTDAAB (and for a myriad of reasons) I stopped actively listening or following them. I still have zero interest almost 20 years on.

You posted one of those in your list recently. (All I Want Is You)

I pulled up the U2 list I made in the wake of HTDAAB. “All I Want…” is #3. “Sweetest Thing” is #19. Not much would change if I redid that list.

Great tune. I never didn’t like it, but it really hit for me in HTDAAB era, the day after I saw a show, was walking around, and it was indeed a beautiful day. 🙂

This time in the yellow circles…Sweetest Thing promotional chocolate bar, Promotional luggage tag for ATYCLB, wristband from Bono’s October 2022 New Yorker performance, deck of cards from HTDAAB 20th anniversary, and PopMart poker chip from crew party in Las Vegas.

…top 40 or 50 U2 songs list with them I made. (It has to have been 2005, as I think about this.)

In the wake of HTDAAB, I bought everything in the back catalog save for one (Pop - I hate “Discotheque” - but I now have the CD from someone giving it to me in the and era) and enjoyed ‘em!

U2’s best song

I’m not posting it anytime soon, but in 2004, I made a list of their best. This was number one then and still is now. Maybe a few HTDAAB tracks might shift, but I think that list still is correct or nearly correct

Fav U2 song is “Angel of Harlem.”

I made a list long ago in the HTDAAB era and probably wouldn’t change anything.

“Sunday Bloody Sunday” was #2.

A few months ago 'favourite songs of 2004' was the music challenge. This was our Top 20. If it had been a Top 30 there would have been 3 more from HTDAAB - Blinding Lights, All Because and Crumbs and maybe 2 more Killers.

Thanks to @musiccountdownguy.bsky.social for hosting #2004Top20
It was great fun posting our Top 20 (which we include here in full) & to see everyone else's choices & also discover numerous songs we've not heard before from 2004.
Next we will start the process of compiling our 1994 Top 20 albums.

My ranking of the albums from a few years ago: Achtung, R&H, HTDAAB, Joshua Tree, Boy, ATYCLB, Unforgettable Fire, Zooropa, War, NLOTH, Songs of Experience, October, Pop, Songs of Innocence

My philosophy on the "uno, dos, tres, ..., catorce" thing has been this: If you count the two live EPs and the first greatest hits album, HTDAAB was the 14th U2 release. My best guess. Also, not counting those three and getting into what's come since...

I found HTDAAB difficult to get into. It came out during the “compression wars” and feels muddy to me.
I’ll take ATYCLB over it as I feel the songwriting is stronger too.

Have you watched “From The Sky Down”?

And it’s RIDICULOUS to say that nothing post 2000 is good. That’s just stupid. ATYCLB and HTDAAB are categorically two of the most commercially successful albums they’ve ever released. And as a hardcore fan I will die on the hill that No Line on the Horizon is good, but not a mainstream work

ATYCLB and HTDAAB are half good and half boring IMO, NLOTH was a bit better, unfortunately the band didn't have much faith in it. And then it all went downhill IMO.

So, in May, I look forward to Ross Braidwood & Bryan Borthwick joining me to create an under 50 minute, single vinyl Supercut of HTDAAB ✂️ With 22 tracks now, it’s going to be tough! 😩

What’s your favourite track from it? 🤔

PS - Fast Cars is an underrated gem 💎
February 19, 2025 at 6:41 PM
Vertigo, Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own, and Original of the Species 🇮🇪

For its 20th anniversary, the band remastered the album & issued How To Re-Assemble An Atomic Bomb 💿 💿 An album of 10 songs recorded at the time for HTDAAB. And they’re really rather good 👍

The perfect antidote to the revisiting of the predictability of the re-release of the most U2 by numbers album that was HTDAAB!
February 7, 2025 at 8:40 AM
We should have written about "Fast Cars," though it's technically on HTDAAB. It was kind of a struggle to keep things brief and ticking along. Don't want to bore anyone.

"There is nothing wrong with being noisy, raw and aggrieved – especially if you’re U2."

After absorbing Reassemble for a couple of months, PJ and Kelly review HTDAAB's shadow album, and they have THOUGHTS.

U2 has never made a bad album. A divisive band sure - one of my favorites but I know not everyone's cup of tea - but their catalog is solid. These aren't a bunch of throwaway tracks even though they didn't make HTDAAB when recorded. They make for a great album on their own. #NEOVC #vinylsky

Não sei pq, mas eu odeio HTDAAB. E tem um monte de música massa, mas tem algo sobre o disco em si q me irrita
