HS2 suggests the British government will always opt for the latter

Another glimpse into the chaos that was the Conservative government and the HS2 project 🚂
Ex-minister for rail and HS2 Huw Merriman has admitted that the cancellation of Phase 2 of the UK’s flagship infrastructure project came as a “complete shock and surprise” as he was not involved in the decision

Full story:
Ex-HS2 minister didn’t know Phase 2 was being cancelled until it was confirm | New Civil Engineer
HS2 Phase 2 was explicitly cancelled in October 2023, when former prime minister Rishi Sunak announced the construction of the line would not continue

Crappy project management from the very top. If you want to know why HS2 failed, look to No 10/11. www.newcivilengineer.com/latest/ex-hs...

And the UK couldn’t even build Hs2!!
November 9, 2025 at 7:05 AM
The UK spent £546 billion cutting a quarter mile tunnel for HS2. We are getting shafted by greedy contractors and incompetent successive Transport Secretaries while the EU joins forces and gets shit done.

Tories scrapped half of HS2, which without the other half would actually make many train times worse.

People said “why don’t you focus on electrification of existing lines then” so now Labour, eager to proven they’re different from Tories, have scrapped all of that too.
Govt scraps all electrification investment. Midland Main Line to stay forever diesel Leicester Nottingham Derby Sheffield. Hugely embarrassing and inexplicable

"in order to focus investment on other projects such as HS2"
Oh? Are they going to actually build HS2 then?
A purely rhetorical question as I know the answer is "nope".

Honestly for a moment there I thought you meant HS2.

We'll just have to take the HS2.

Maybe when she came up with her stupid rules she might have checked what they were borrowing money to do. In the case of HS2 the money would have been paid back by revenues. Something on the current schedule we might never see.

Nice try,Europe. Not interested in your swish,continent-wide,high-speed connections. We’re happy with our 8-9 hours from Caergybi/Holyhead to Abergwaun/Fishguard,which involves crossing into another country. We’re ok with giving London £4Bn HS2 funding.Nothing but sunlit uplands #BrexitBritain 🇬🇧🎊🚂🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 👀🥴

Today's video about #HS2 Interchange will be late, but I'm aiming to release it by 16:00 today

My latest: Move over bat tunnel, here’s the wild story of how HS2 were forced to build a multi-million pound bridge for a road that… doesn’t actually exist.
How HS2 built a bridge to nowhere
A state-of-the-art road bridge has been built deep in the heart of rural Buckinghamshire. Designed to carry traffic over the HS2 railway, there's just one tiny problem - there's no actual road.

I live in Nottingham, it takes about 2 hours to get to London. In Newark, 40 min drive away (east coast mainline) it takes an hour.

Even leaving aside the huge environmental need for us to move to trains, maybe that hour would help the economy? oh and HS2 disrupts Notts but doesn't stop here.

How long was HS2 planned for? Then scrapped 🤔

Thanks to at lot of work by @greens4hs2.bsky.social party policy is in support of HS2.

Lord Adonis set up HS2 to investigate a high speed line between London and Birmingham. So no.

(you could have six-tracked Watford-Tring if capacity was the goal, but unlikely to be value-for-money)

Enjoy an absolutely mad HS2 story with your Monday lunch.

Completely fascinating and helps to explain how HS2 costs more than any other train worldwide. Also, I don't think there's enough about how much of this is driven by corruption. A series of powerful interest groups with revolving door employment arrangements ensuring expensive work for all involved.

Interesting, if sobering episode of The Freewheeling Podcast on rail electrification by @freewheeling.info. Having worked on HS2, East West Rail and Midland Main Line electrification (until earlier this year I was suddenly not working on MML any more), I feel the pain.
