#HPCDesktop
I am excited to give a talk at Oak Ridge National Laboratory next week. I will be talking about my favorite topic, making #HPC systems easier to use and providing researchers with tools that help them get more science done. #HPCDesktop.

I will also take a deduction for "it depends"... 😁
If we define "10x in impact" as HPC making the broadest impact on science, I will go with usability. There are a lot of scientists out there that could benefit from HPC systems but have no idea how to use them and don't feel ready. #HPCDesktop 😎

I published my first LinkedIn article, where I am reflecting on the #HPC Desktop and how I presented it at Oak Ridge National Lab two weeks ago. It even contains a call to action. 😁 If you are going to #SC25, I would love to chat about the #HPCDesktop.

Secure and Scalable: The Case for the HPC Desktop
In October 2025, I gave a talk about the HPC Desktop Concept at Oak Ridge National Lab. I had given a similar talk at the HPC-AI Advisory Council meeting earlier in the year and at the University of D...

My experience coding with AI in 7 posts.

I tried making HPC systems easier to use for a long time. An HPC Desktop is one way to accomplish this goal. (github.com/RobertHensch...) Think of an HPC Desktop as a login node, but serving a full remote Linux desktop. 1/7 #HPCDesktop #HPC #InteractiveHPC

My "SLURM Desktop" prototype for Linux HPC Desktops continues to evolve, thanks to Cursor! Interactive jobs are great, but how about running MATLAB in a job with just a few clicks?! Or any other graphical Linux app... Code available here: github.com/RobertHensch...

I continue to explore Cursor... and I created an app that shows SLURM partitions. Took me less than 1 hour! Try it and let me know if it works: github.com/RobertHensch... Needs to run on a system with SLURM binaries available, like an HPC Desktop or a login node with X11. #hpc #hpcdesktop

Starting interactive jobs ✅
Running applications in SLURM ✅

How about shell scripts? How about leveraging desktop features like drag and drop to make it easy for new users? Rapid prototyping with Cursor really is a lot of fun! Code available here: github.com/RobertHensch...

The tool is up on Github, send me a direct message if you want to try it. All you need is a normal user account, no elevated privileges are required. Runs on an #HPCDesktop or on a laptop using ssh port forwarding.

I played with modeling an #HPC center as a collection of objects. Then I used Cursor to create a prototype app. Data providers running on a login node and the browser can run on a laptop or an #HPCDesktop. Blows my mind how fast I can explore ideas thanks to coding with LLMs.

I am experimenting with Cursor for rapid prototyping of apps. It works remarkably well! Here are two apps I created last week in just a few hours. Both apps are intended for a Linux remote desktop, that sits in front of an HPC system. I will share more in the next couple of days. #HPCDesktop #HPC

Following up on my post a few days ago, I have released the Simple Usage Monitor for HPC Desktops. I built the app using Cursor and Claude Sonnet. If you happen to have an HPC Desktop setup, give it a try and let me know what you think! github.com/RobertHensch...
