#Gundungurra
"First Nations burned small areas with..control & precision..This produced low fire risk..colonisers used large fires to clear litter & promote pasture..a Gundungurra elder told Dame Mary Gilmore: "..lit them & let them run like a child that loved destruction""

In 1939, a Royal Commission found burning forests leads to more bushfires. But this cycle of destruction can be stopped
After devastating fires in 1939, authorities began burning forests to reduce fuel load. But we now know this creates conditions for even worse fires.

We do. ("The original name for the Blue Mountains in the language of the Dharug and Gundungurra peoples is Colomatta (more accurately pronounced Gulu-mada). The meaning of the name is 'koala place' from colo + matta.")

As always, so keen to tell more rural stories, and to see what's happening on Ngunnawal, Wiradjuri, Gundungurra, Tharawal, Ngarigo, and Yuin Country. So from Cowra to the capital, yiradhu marang and yuma. 👋

(Proud to say no AI was used in the making of this very terrible graphic.)

It wouldn't surprise me at all if wombat-hate is important to whiteness - settler/farmer versus (I think) Gundungurra custodians.

Went and looked it up because I didn’t know either.
The name Megalong Valley is derived from a Gundungurra Aboriginal word believed to mean “valley under the rock”. When Europeans arrived around the 1830s, Indigenous people had lived in the area for an estimated 40,000 years.

It was a stunningly beautiful early Autumn day up here this morning. I went for a walk with my daughter and we enjoyed being in nature.

Here’s a quintessential photo that everyone takes when they come up here.

A few photos I snapped while in the Blue Mountains on Dharug and Gundungurra Land. Australia is generally considered the only wealthy/industrialized nation that is also a deforestation hotspot.

Experts have called for reform of its env. laws, which the current gov promised and shelved.

We live, work and play on land that was forcibly taken from Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people. On this stolen land, systems & institutions have been built that are structured to exclude and oppress.
