If you want secure and private instant messaging: use Signal.
If you want a secure and private mobile phone operating system: use GrapheneOS.

I'm finally using zero Google apps on my grapheneOS phone. Maps was the last holdout, half inertia half function -- but Google maps quality slowly deteriorates, and CoMaps incrementally improved, so there you go.
Oh wait, I have Home in use for some security cameras. None of them point at the […]

Google Pixel 9 with #grapheneos installed.
An app, after the latest update, is now requiring Google Play. After some research, MicroG (Foss) is being suggested as an alternative. Any comments or opinions?

Completed my first personal technology upgrade after this year's #distribits: new phone running #grapheneos

Believe it or not I try, heck I even got one of the GrapheneOS devs attention, but this is social media and politics are the thing right now.

Download an Ubuntu image, copy it to usb or burn a cd, and give it a try. It’s come a long way, and there are lots of avenues for community support.
Phones are harder. I’m looking forward to see which oem grapheneos is working with so I can maybe get off iOS without giving google $ for a Pixel.

If you don't know what GrapheneOS and Kubuntu are, you're pathetically unqualified to talk about computer software.

"AI" doesn't have to replace search if you actually put a few minutes of research into finding AI-free alternatives! 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
All my search is 2019 style. No Gen AI is in my GrapheneOS phone, nor my Kubuntu laptop.
Quit acting helpless. You're not helpless against Covid either, wear a goddamn respirator

I have a pixel 5a with a broken screen, otherwise functional. I see grapheneos no longer supports the 5, would it be worth it to try to fix it? was wanting a travel phone but I don't want it to be insecure. wondering if it's insecure insecure or insecure by graphene's high standards. screen is $89

I just bought a Pixel 9a mobile phone, and I'm trying my darnest to de-Gurgle as much as possible. So I've installed #grapheneos on it. (Note: Wicked easy to do. Great job, developers!)

GrapheneOS is a security-first operating system for Pixel phones, an alternative to Android. It comes with a pretty minimal browser but I think you can remove it if you like. You can add any app you want through Google Play - and with more control over the permissions given when you add stuff, too.

US friends should check this out. Potentially a better alternative to dropping GrapheneOS on a Pixel with all the associated caveats. Personal devices need to support privacy out of the box.

Android 16 was released in June 2025 and GrapheneOS fully migrated it in June 2025. We already have the Android 16 UI changes.
Android 16 QPR1 is a newer release currently exclusive to the stock Pixel OS which has not been released to the Android Open Source Project so we can't migrate to it yet.
