I see some people arguing that what we might think is AI may actually be ESL but I think AI writing is different. ESL errors, whether caused by misapplying grammar, misunderstanding a definition, whatever, still sound human. AI writing has the cadence of being written by something that has no mouth

I learned Japanese for "Don't like don't look" 「いやだという声が多かったので見せません」

change the 見せ to 読み and it probably means "Don't like don't read" (I suck at grammar in all languages tho)

Interesting. I was reading by the time I got to school at 5. Parents always read to me with the book open in front of me

I took read very quickly. Mum insisted I always had a dictionary to hand and looked up words I didn't know

Grammar and spelling lessons at school saw me sent to the library

So stereotypical, but when i read Catcher in the Rye, i thought "wow, I can be a writer! This is real and makes sense to me! And swear words!" I am old. I wanted to be a writer, and I became one. Forgive my wine-induced grammar and spelling! It changed me. Great question💜

Maybe acting as a grammar and punctuation checker, but frankly any writer worth a damn is always going to produce better work than the pablum bullshit spat out by an llm. I would never let it near my work because I would never trust it to actually understand what I was trying to say.

the fact that that is the correct spelling, yet the pronunciation is kees-ter, not kay-ster. shows just how deeply unserious grammar and spelling are.

Student: But English isn't my first language!
Me: I know. And so do they. Get a friend to check your grammar if necessary. A few errors on a paper in college won't kill you, either.
Student: ... bad grammar is better?
Me: You’re asking if bad grammar is better than the cheating machine?
Student: Oh.

3 and 4, but specifically the ghost of an English teacher. I'd probably end up with better grammar

He’s just teaching phonics.

Is phonics not taught anymore? Have I lived outside of America for so long that phonics as a subject doesn’t exist anymore?

When I first read about this method I was absolutely gobsmacked.

If you want your faith in humanity restored, I love this guy’s teaching and enthusiasm. youtu.be/1Nt7nscNIH8?...

Although what I did have backing me was a tremendously rigourful grammar lesson-set. I hated sentence diagramming so damn much but by golly it learnt me. It learnt me good.

I mean, isn’t proper reading kind of both learning phonics, grammar, pronunciation and cadence rules AND how to use context for meaning?

I really don’t wannna read about what three cueing is as it sounds like some nonsense my kids have somehow avoided.

Am I off base and should I actually read up?

A real world in which real people are suffering.

Just because YOU chose to jump on the everybody's-saying-it bandwagon doesn't mean I'M dumb enough to fail to THINK THIS THROUGH.

So you can take your grammar-impaired and inexplicably nose-in-the-air analysis and shove it up your nethers.
