In response, Goodwin said: 44 My message to everybody in this seat is if you are working hard, paying taxes, contributing to this economy, you should be as concerned by what's happening in 10 Downing Street as I am. We have got a government under Keir Starmer that is clearly not in touch with the people in this seat. It’s not about what your religion is, it’s not about what your race is, what your ethnicity is. Goodwin has been criticised for claiming recently that being born and brought up in the UK did not mean that people from black, Asian or other immigrant backgrounds were always British, saying: “It takes more than a piece of paper to make somebody ‘British’” Speaking at an event in Denton, the GB News presenter declined twice to answer when asked by the Guardian whether he stands by those views - which have been described by the Lib Dems as “racist” and “abhorrent”. Nearly half of the Gorton and Denton population - 44% - identify as coming from an ethnic minority background, while 79% of the constituency identifies as British, according to the latest census. Goodwin refused to answer the Guardian’s questions as he posed for photographs alongside Lee Anderson, the Reform UK MP, at a bar in Denton. In a potential boost to both Labour and the Greens on Monday, George Galloway, the rabble-rousing former Labour MP who more recently represented Rochdale as a pro-Gaza independent, ruled himself out of the byelection after earlier suggesting he would stand. The 71-year-old, who was first elected to parliament in 1987, announced that alocal councillor, Shahbaz Sarwar, would instead stand for his Workers Party of Britain.

Zack Polanski, the Green leader, briefly considered standing in the seat - he comes from Manchester - but has opted to focus on winning a seat in London, where he lives. However he was due in the constituency on Tuesday to kick off a campaign which the party hopes could see hundreds of activists delivering leaflets and knocking on doors at the weekend.

That much will be revealed when the Gorton by-election comes. Only Burnham could have won it for Labour. Starmer’s critics now fear the party will not only lose it, but forfeit their claim to challenge Reform entirely, as was the case in Caerphilly last October when Plaid Cymru galvanised progressive opposition to both the government and Farage. This time it is Zack Polanski’s insurgent Greens who stand to benefit. “A Reform win would be terrible,” said a sometime adviser to the leadership. “But a Green win would be existential.” Already imperilled by one unwinnable test of his electoral appeal in May, Starmer has chosen to contrive another in February.
