The German word for 'first', erste, is unsurprisingly unrelated to English's, but I like how each has a current cognate in the other language.

The English word is related to German Fürst 'prince' (the 'foremost', like Latin princeps), while the cognate of German erste can be found in 'erstwhile'.

English-monolingual guests meet a German-monolingual staff member at a hotel. They all visibly lack routines to handle the situation.
This is one small episode in their lives but the cumulative effects of frustrating failed encounters will be significant if Europe keeps cutting language education.
