I just came across a geostatistics MOOC where in the second module they introduce data types (categorical vs ordinal etc), and in the third one they introduce the semi-variogram. WTF?

Interestingly, people applying cultural evolution to archaeology (evolutionary archaeologists 😅?), probably closer to fields like geostatistics and so on, have been using null model similar to IBD models for a while (cf early 2010s papers from @ercrema.bsky.social, Shennan, etc.)
