Sparrow was determined to capture the moth which was equally determined not to be caught. Sparrow had got it by the left wing but it managed to flutter away It was exhausted from its ordeal so I brought it inside, kept it cool for a couple of hours and then put it in a very safe place. It's had a tough time.

A very red looking Common Wainscot. Pink rather than red Wainscot - Common. Soft beige, the Smokey Wainscot Just one precious minute with the Humming Bird Hawk Moth today. I've been given permission to go into the garden where the very large Buddleia attracts masses of butterflies and the Hummer too.

Dark wings with white patch towards the outer edge of the upper wing. I'm reasonably confident about this - says she... A very pretty very pale green with a darker line running across upper and lower wing and another line just on the upper wing. There's a very slight hook to the tip of the upper wing Not sure this actually IS a moth but it has impressively long antennae and big brown eyes From the side the head and thorax look red and the wings quite iridescent. It's a pretty little insect.

Mrs HBHM investigating the Gallium which decided to grow itself in the Primrose, Cowslip and Pulmonaria garden 2 years ago. I didn't find any eggs in this dense mass of greenery but absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence is it? After all her effort I could only hope. I had never seen this before, Mrs HBHM actually laying an egg on MY wall while I watched and recorded the event. I found 4 of these beautiful and tiny pale green globes just inches above the Gallium. Sadly the next day they had been predated. C'est la vie, but I don't have to like it, would have enjoyed raising these little moths.

Set off for walkies without a camera and saw THIS. Rushed back home, and the Humming Bird Hawk Moth was still feeding a big Buddliea which is always very popular with butterflies and other insects. I didn't see any Hummers last year so delighted to get a chance to photograph this one. Also counted 1 Holly Blue, 11 Peacock, 3 Red Admiral, 1 Comma and several Lrge White I am not very happy with the photos. As always the moth was very fast moving as expected but the strong wind added to the usual difficulty associated with this little beauty. Orange underwings clearly showing, long proboscis probing deep into the Buddleia flower The moth has flown up from the flowers and the tip of the proboscis is curled inwards. The right antenna is shorter than the left

Dark with intricate markings and lighter wing edges and head. Quite a large moth Brown with 2 distinctive marks on each wing A faded beauty, quite small, white head, inner wings and lower edge of wings Quite small white and darker creamy colour. Could it be Straw Dot?

I think this is a Fanfoot, I wonder why it is so named. Light brown with 2 wavy lines and a straight one across the wings. This beautiful little green and white moth is, I believe, a Marbled Beauty and very well named Grey with black marks, it's either a Miller or a Dagger - or something entirely different. Very pretty though. Don't know what kind of Pug this is, but I don't think it's Toadflax or Foxglove. It's a bit brown which would eliminate the Green Pug too.

A Wave but I'm not sure which, Common or Plain. It's definitely pretty though! Had 3 visit last night's trapping. A Common Footman, one of 5 3 of which rolled on their backs when I opened the trap I'm not totally convinced that this is a Heart & Dart, it doesn't look quite right. Holding hands with a pink Elephant, always a great joy when they sit so calmly and pose for photos. Stacked in camera OM1ii 60mm lens It flew into the self seeded path blocking Gallium and then further into the depths of my jungle A profile crop a beautiful deep pink and olive green moth with big brown eyes which clearly states that all moths are NOT dull and grey! A full face crop. It looks a bit cross, I think. Curled proboscis below the pink area between the eyes. Wings were vibrating as were the antennae as it prepared for flight.

3rd to 4th instar. The caterpillar has walked out of its old, too tight skin. After a short break for a rest, it turned round and ate the skin. At the top of the image the silken threads which make up the cocoon are visible and are pulling the sides of the Buddleia leaf togther. The caterpillar is bent backwards and a silk thread is visible from the centre left of the leaf to the spinarette below its head. It will attach that thread to the right of the leaf. The top of the cocoon has been built, a dense thicket of silk and in this shot the caterpillar is beginning to drag the leaf into place. Most of the leaf is in position now. Job done! The bottom of the leaf has been pulled up and attached to the silk which joins the 2 sides of the leaf. The caterpillar is still slightly visible but soon the chrysalis will be formed enclosing the caterpillar so that the miracle of metamorhosis can occur. The cocoon is now in the coolest part of the house and will be kept safe until the moth ecloses.
