Our boy is 8 now, loves drawing fish & birds though his AuDHD means he’s easily distracted and seldom finishes stuff, meaning reams of paper covered in unfinished bird compendia/ocean habitats. Which is lush, BUT I thought a drawing app might help him focus a bit.

Currently there’s no published evidence for any effects of climate on gannet foraging range but obviously hard to test given the massive reductions at many colonies.

The Northern Gannet is a large, heavy-bodied seabird, roughly the size of a goose or even a small albatross. Length: From tip of the beak to the end of its tail, it can be about a metre long, so holding your arms out wide you can get an idea of its body length. Wingspan: When its wings are spread, they span an impressive 1.8 to 1.9 metres (about 6 feet). Body shape: It has a sleek, sharp appearance, with a long, pointed tail and long, slender, pointed wings, which help it cut through the air and water efficiently. If you could touch a model or the bird itself (in a controlled environment): Feathers: The plumage is mostly very smooth and dense to be waterproof and streamlined for diving. Beak: It has a heavy, strong, and very sharp bill, light bluish-grey in colour, which it uses like a spear to catch fish. Head: Its head has an almost triangular, wedge-like shape, tapering into that sharp bill. The neck is long and thick. Special adaptations: Underneath the skin on its face and chest, there is a layer of spongy, bubble-wrap-like air sacs that cushion the impact when it dives into the sea.

We call on NatureScot to put an immediate and permanent end to the licensed killing of gannet chicks (guga) on Sula Sgeir.

In 2025, NatureScot authorised the killing of up to 500 chicks. Official counts confirm that 485 fledglings were taken from the cliffs and slaughtered.
