#GamerGate
Holy shit. Man, I was around online and noped out of several communities that I'd been part off for years over Gamergate, and somehow I'm still constantly surprised by how much powerful men in this country hate women.

Might have to return to TikTok because they're having a moment with Groypers, 4chan, re-litigation of Gamergate and stuff right now, and I saw a video where someone (whose entire knowledge of 4chan was watching The Anti-Social Network" claimed that 4chan was a "left-wing" website at the start ಠ_ಠ

It's been 10 years since Gamergate & we're still dealing with the fallout.
I wrote a piece a few weeks ago claiming antisemitism was on the verge of going mainstream. It was clear to me that most people had trouble buying it.

That's understandable. But it's happening.

Example: Conservatives themselves are now saying that 30 to 40% of Zoomers in Washington are Groypers.

It's extremely rattling to check up on the youtubers I used to watch in my edgy phase about 15 years ago and realise that they are still doing basically the exact same thing

They kind of split along gamergate lines, of course, but seeing the video list just fills me with existential dread

The Geoff Keighley Doritos Pope incident was one of the reasons I fell for the "Gamergate is about ethics in games journalism" canard at first, since it was still fresh in the memory:
cannot stand geoff keighley and it drives me nuts how often ppl defend his garbage

“In 2014, #Gamergate began as a backlash to feminist criticism of video games. There was the follow-up ‘ #Comicsgate,’ during which a bunch of female and nonwhite comic-book creators were harassed. Hard-core fans of #Ghostbusters… erupted over an all-woman reboot.”

The far right is obsessed with Lord of the Rings and Musk keeps posting about "hobbits" because modern scientific racism owes more to fantasy worlds and gaming systems than genetic science, and they see both as effective mediums for right-wing propaganda www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2025/1...

Yes, there would. He wouldn't talk like Trump, and the optics would be different, but the US was always going to cough up some kind of caudillo. I've been waiting for one since at least the Nixon years. Trump is a symptom, not the cause. I do agree that the path it's taken came from Gamergate.

It sucks ass that more people won't see this because you are absolutely right.

In fact, it makes me think Gamergate was partially a Psyop to hasten this process.

I mean, think about it. How many people we defended (on the "left" side) ended up having terrible politics, like Brianna Wu?
I steadfastly maintain that the day the left ceded being horny to the right was the day any chance we had of actually making positive change for the future died

elon gets away with levels of fake fan far more egregious than that which the subjects of gamergate were accused of

Feels like some leftists took away a mistaken idea from the Gamergate kerfuffle and thought cracking down on sexual content was woke, which it isn't
In a lot of ways other leftists chose this path folks. They shrugged and didn’t care when Patreon banned a ton of hypnosis and TF creators, or when YouTube started their ASMR crackdown. Now it’s coming for queer porn creators, more and more. Who will stand up?

it was very stupid of gamers to convince Phil fish to leave the industry by doing gamergate shit, so there's that
November 11, 2025 at 9:49 PM
They are basically leaving the terrain clear for right wing grifters to basically do a repeat of gamergate.
November 11, 2025 at 9:48 PM
yeah I suppose I'm mostly just in a bubble of everyone who turned out okay. Basically everyone I knew from HS who was centrist/apathetic about gamergate became socialist by like 2016-2017

Gamergate was shit that happened online that has had mass ramifications on our real world. I think people anxiosly project that model onto other things, wondering what is going to be the bext thing that jumps offpine like that

One of the frustrating side consequences of gamergate is convincing so many people everything online is the next gamergate rather than just the discourse du jour

This series of conversations kicked ass as the conversation of tech upgrades always being good devolved into "Well the Internet did lead to hateful rhetoric, gamergate ect" and the response became "Well go offline if you don't want to see that"

Anyway I found the exact post that did the killshot.

When us old-timers say "everything's Gamergate now", it's because that tactic worked. And it's the same one here.

Trying to make your argument into a label and identity, then hide behind it to feint moral high ground, worked pretty well on old Twitter. They're trying it with AI too. Fuck that.

Examples of backlash against inclusivity go back a lot of further than Gamergate, it's just that the internet and an alt-right infrastructure allowed it to take off

Everything is just Gamergate

As a nerd who has loved to see other people dive deep into the stuff I've been mucking about with most of my life, it's so weird to see how everything has become gamergate www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2025/1...

"Praticamente todos os passatempos nerds passaram por algo semelhante na última década, o efeito cascata da desnerdificação. Em 2014, o Gamergate começou como uma reação às críticas feministas aos videogames. Seguiu-se o 'Comicsgate', no qual quadrinistas mulheres e não brancos foram assediados"

Gamergate started with a post about a "review". What do you mean?
November 11, 2025 at 3:00 PM
You can hate something in the game that is still a good game but you give it a low score because it contains things you don't. This was how we got gamergate and the space flooded with bad faith reviews (critical drinker) types.

I know they are subjective but critical analysis feels lacking.
