There are legit uses for LLMs and GPTs. However those are REALLY NARROW and trust me none of the reasons you could say they're "good" and "helpful" for the gen pop are any of the things it makes sense for. They're biased as fuck and their biggest backers are billionaires who do not care about you.

They need to harvest other people's creativity and originality. The truly generative systems (like DeepMind is experimenting with) are very narrowly specialized. But GPTs are like a smart rolodex, it's ok for archiving related tasks

"Attention is All You Need" (the paper that begat GPTs) was published in 2017. Bycroft's LLM data flow visualizers (bbycroft.net/llm) went live in 2021. Anthropic's Claude "map" was released in mid-2024

Obviously LLMs are (at least) the closest thing we have created to human intelligence. It passes the Turing test so to start talking about what it doesn’t do you’ll need better tests.

the most use I get out of GPTs is generating stock character mooks for my kid to fight in D&D. I would pay about 5-10 bucks a month for that service. I do not think that could pay for NVIDIA Blackwell-architecture GPUs with their custom-built TSMC 4NP process

I’ve used GPTs at my job that are supposedly designed for specific tasks I regularly perform, some of which are quite tedious. Not once have they saved me time. Instead of composing something that’s relatively easy to do from scratch, I spend twice the time cleaning up inconsistent, wordy nonsense.
There are basically only two positions in the debate about AI.
1. I’ve barely invested any time in learning how to use it effectively. AI sucks.
2. I’ve invested in learning how to use this tool. Holy cow, it’s transformational.
Position #1 has lower barriers to entry.

I’ve used GPTs at my job that are supposedly designed for specific tasks I regularly perform, some of which are quite tedious. Not once have they saved me time. Instead of composing something that’s relatively easy to do from scratch, I spend twice the time cleaning up inconsistent, wordy nonsense.
The underlying tools that make generative AI work - GANs, GPTs, etc are very impressive and do have actual uses. Those uses are being largely ignored and sidelined to focus all the funding on producing moronic chatbots and non-consensual porn of strangers.

And the fact that C3PO is really a language master makes sense also. GPTs are useful language tools that don't think, but they do translate sentenses very well.

So not only did they use a synthetic text extruding machine to do the analysis, it also suggested that these jobs can actually be automated.
My guess is that they did an "analysis" like the "GPTs are GPTs" paper. We discussed this when it came out.
