3/3 …fluoresces UV+ light blue from divaricatic acid! That said, sister species and 'dreaded GSC' F pusilla does too, and it looks otherwise identical to sterile F lightfootii. But F pusilla tends to form small (<10mm) orbicular thalli. Larger thalli like this one are best recorded as F lightfootii.

2/3 …because they're all quite similar and often tricky to identify. F lightfootii is perhaps most easily confused with Lecanora compallens, which is less common, but which also reacts negative to all chemical spot-tests. But unlike L compallens and almost all other 'dreaded GSCs', F lightfootii…

1/3 This is Fuscidea lightfootii from Bracorina, Loch Morar, Scotland. First for hectad NM79. Normally fertile, it's sometimes found infertile as here, with soredia (powdery vegetative propagules) only. In this state, it's easy to confuse with other 'dreaded green sorediate crusts': dreaded…

Upland weathered fence posts are #lichen-rich with a wide range of species. Factors at play: exposure, usually well-lit, wood type and chemical treatment. Bird perching leads to manuring and an ornithocoprophilous lichen community. #lichengbi

Exploring #lichens on the #Isle-of-Rona in #Scotland

Umbilicaria species grow on hard exposed rock in mountain environments. They are unusual foliose lichens since they are attached by a single, often central holdfast. I found two on Rona

Ja, detta är på en sten. Din är väl på ett träd?

Absolut samma sorts lav tänker jag.

On birch bark at Kelling Heath - Normandina pulchella, Jamesiella anastomosans, Fuscidea lightfootii. And a fruiting Hypotrachyna, maybe afrorevoluta.

On the lead work which we were replacing i noticed Physcia caesia and possibly Fuscidea lygaea 🙂 @larkinlichen.bsky.social

Other lichen finds from our trip up to the disused Dufton lead mine include Peltigera neckeri, which likes lead-contaminated soil, and more common rock and heath species: Porpidia tuberculosa, Fuscidea kochiana and Cetraria islandica. #LichenGBI #lichens

My favourite Fuscidea cyathoides stone, Cnoc Fola, Donegal.

I've photographed this stone for three years in a row. I keep meaning to put together a stop motion animation of the lichens!

Yes, it surprised me, especially when next to the blue of Fuscidea lightfootii. Photos may emerge!

The close up photo shows soralia so not Fuscidea lygaea. If the chemical tests are -ve it could be Porpidea tuberculosa. K/UV would help.

Fuscidea lygaea is a possibility

More crustose mosaic lichens growing on the top of Cnoc Fola (Bloody Foreland). Likely to be Fuscidea cyathoides (many thanks to Di Napier fo the ID!)

Could be wrong, but I think that lovely mousy-brown patchwork with black outlines is Fuscidea cyathoides

In my search for Fuscidea lightfootii (which as I understand has a more coarse thallus than Amandinea punctata) I came found this #lichen. Compared to the other Amandinea it had a coarser thallus. Microscopically I would say still Amandinea - but heavily colonized by al lichenicolous fungus.

Thank you for this comprehensive writeup! I will keep looking for Fuscidea lightfootii and show once I found it.

5/5x To me the spores look 1 septate but the descriptions vary and it is a nightmare to key out to genus as spores can be colourless when young, brown when more mature, and some sources say simple and some say septate. But I do think it is Fuscidea lightfootii anyway 🙂

2/5 Easy to tell the difference between Fuscidea lightfootii (UV+ white) and Lecidella elaeochroma (UV+orange) even though they are both green thalli with black lecideine apothecia
