apparently the problem with valgrind was because freebsd's latest quarterly repo has an old version of it, switched to latest/main and it works fine now

libusb ( https:// github.com/libusb/libusb ) has `typedef int libusb_hotplug_callback_handle;` FreeBSD's libusb has `typedef struct libusb_hotplug_callback_handle_struct *libusb_hotplug_callback_handle;` As it happens these are not the same

Hard call. I think FreeBSD's kernel is lighter and better for most cases, but its not near as cross-platform. Linux is certainly the best for the most supported though. So it depends on the need.

The discussion also dives into licensing: did Linux's GPL license fuel its success, and has FreeBSD's BSD license hindered its adoption? This impacts how projects evolve & attract contributors. #OpenSource 4/6

Despite FreeBSD's technical elegance, Linux's widespread adoption, vast hardware support, and larger community make it the practical choice for many, especially desktop users. Is FreeBSD's appeal about genuine advantages or a touch of nostalgia? #LinuxEcosystem 3/6

Sylve: A Security Deep Dive into FreeBSD’s Maturing Unified Web Management Interface
As anticipation builds for the FreeBSD 15.0 stable release, the recent Q3-2025 status report from the FreeBSD project has highlighted several key development milestones. Among these, the maturation of Sylve, a unified web management interface, stands out as a significant development for administrators. At AllSafeUs Research Labs, our primary focus is always on understanding the security implications of such advancements. While Sylve promises streamlined operations, it also introduces new considerations for system hardening and threat mitigation.

Hm, my "readline" isn't echoing characters in FreeBSD's framebuffer (TERM=xterm) despite using the very same function to print characters (narrow multibyte).

Hmm. To fix soon.

I need to figure out the incantation to make NUT make itself a server for that UPS though, so I can easily hook up the exporter to it (FreeBSD’s rc script for the exporter doesn’t expose the needed cli option to connect to a remote ups)

Immutable Software Deploys Using ZFS Jails on FreeBSD
💥 Check out this trending post from Hacker News 📖 📂 Category: 📌 Key idea: November 6, 2025 FreeBSD’s native support for ZFS snapshots and jails provides a powerful foundation for immutable deployments. By creating a new jail from a ZFS snapshot for every release, we get instant roll‑backs, zero‑downtime upgrades, and a clean, reproducible environment. This article walks through the (very opinionated) flow that we use.

💬 Bikeshedding’s charm is strong, but dismissing good ideas? No thanks. FreeBSD’s underdog status stirs up nostalgia. 😏
