For #FontsFriday, the font from Valleberga church, southern Sweden, made in the 1170s by the so-called Tryde master (Tryde being a nearby church with an equally splendid font).
An elaborately chiselled stone font, with a round top (this holds the water for baptism) on a round base. The base has four protruding heads of beasts and human figures. The other carvings show scenes from a medieval legend. There is hardly a fragment of the font that’s not decorated. Close-up of a protruding head: a lion holding a small animal in its mouth. Close-up of another protruding figure - not a head this time but two persons on horses on each side of the corner (yes, the font is round, but you know what I mean) embracing in the middle.

C15-C16 St Thomas a Becket church at Pulham, #Dorset, England. The font is C12 indicating an earlier church. My 4x great-grandmother was baptized here in 1776. I wonder if the shafts were replaced in emergency situations! #fontsfriday #Genealogy #FamilyHistory
