Well, it only took ten years, but I've finally thought of a pithy way of describing my first novel and it's FernGully with anxiety!

INT. LIVING ROOM — EVENING

RACHEL is trying to convince her ROOMMATE to watch an "Avatar" film.

RACHEL
It's like "Ferngully" meets "The Terminator"…

ROOMMATE
Then I would rather watch "Ferngully."

They tried to destroy Ferngully because they were mad Robin Williams was going to be in it while also being in Aladdin.

At least Ferngully had Robin Williams and Tim Curry

I keep thinking Caveman FernGully! Great art

Plus the *real* interesting comparison isn't ferngully or dances with wolves, it's Pom Poko

Growing up on Fievel, Ferngully, and in the Episcopal Church...wild how I turned out the way I did.
It’s hard to believe but there was a cartoon about an immigrant mouse and it was seen as totally fine and not controversial and not woke because it was an aspirational and nice thing about America that people could come here and find a better life

A few things. One of my absolute earliest memories is of bats: seeing real ones while on a boat by a lakehouse, as well as the cartoon film FernGully, which featured a fruitbat named Koda, voiced by Robin Williams. Must’ve been 2ish. Also, I have a UV allergy; even a moment in the sun & I get rashes

Growing up were there any moments in movies that traumatized you? A few actually. I'll list them.

The cave of wonders
The clown from brave little toaster
The villain from who framed Roger rabbit
Hexus in ferngully
Wilbur realizing he was gonna be slaughtered in Charlotte's web
November 7, 2025 at 5:55 AM
anyway Tim Curry is hot in everything and I am including FernGully in this assessment
November 3, 2025 at 3:49 PM

Rock and Rule is Ferngully 2: they failed to save the world. Omar is Zak's descendant.

Gremlins and Hellraiser coexist in a universe in which you should absolutely never go to a garage sale.
Name movie or tv universes that aren’t connected but should be.

Hexxus, the smog monster from FernGully, has endorsed Andrew Cuomo

(still editing PNW trip) the number of forest photos I take screams "this guy watched a lot of FernGully: The Last Rainforest as a kid"

Now the right famously never moderates itself in our direction. You got an epa head? Not even within the "environmentalist" umbrella at all. It's either a coal exec or Hexus the pollution demon from Ferngully.

They will destroy the world to avoid conceding. We destroy it in our drive to do so.

Does anyone know of any good size fiction with a natural born micro having to protect someone who has been shrunk and is finding this all a bit too much?

I want the cool confidence to contrast with someone who previously would have been able to end them.

(I swear to god, if anyone says Ferngully)

For those who know, this tree reminds me of the end of Ferngully 🥹

Ever watch Ferngully? This consumption - burning the earth is connected to how we live psychologically in the world. The hunger doesn't end. The Ouroboros needs to eat it's own tail not the world.
Trump has never been supportive of green technologies, but in his second term he has made a concerted effort to wreck climate policies. The world now has a carbon bully, as one expert put it.

As COP30 nears, the US’s pressure to keep fossil fuels relevant may empower petrostates, potentially giving them more leverage at the UN talks.
