It looks like good news to me. ## Art and Freedom As soon as I read Warner’s blog post and then the “Freedom” website, I was inspired. For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted my music to be for the betterment of humanity. This seems like a great opportunity to make it so. So, I’m organizing a piano improvisation concert. The first round of art events by Fall of Freedom will take place on November 21-22. I chose Friday, the 21st and plans are underway. Improvisation is the ideal content for me. As you know, I see improv as a high art form. Just as importantly, its spontaneity means that the connection between “the moment” and the music is never more apparent. In this case, that moment will be about whoever happens to gather on that Friday night. ## Community Inspired Improv I hope that some of my friends will join me. And I’m clear that the piano improv will be my expression whether that’s two people or two hundred. Because I’m an improviser, I don’t know exactly how the concert will go. Somehow, I will ask people for the single word that best conveys what freedom means to them. Maybe I’ll ask other questions, but only time will tell. Obviously, I won’t be publishing a setlist. It will truly be improvised and created in the moment. Be part of the inspiration to seek freedom. Join us if you are able. ## First of Freedom At home, I’ve improvised on the piano many times. Dozens of those I’ve recorded as parts of albums, EPs/suites, and singles. I’ve created individual improvisations in celebrations, ceremonies, and retreat settings. But this will be the first time I’ve performed a full concert of piano improvisations. I don’t know if I’m more nervous about the performance or about losing our freedoms. It doesn’t matter. Fall of Freedom is a new initiative mobilizing the cultural community to lead acts of “creative resistance” against authoritarian forces.
