On the topic of disasters, a whole SECTION of AmeriCorps NCCC was dedicated to working with FEMA to respond to disasters (FEMACorps). They've now taken this all away. 5/x

It’s time to stop hamstringing FEMA by putting it under the purview of cops. Law enforcement is a part of disaster response, but proper “homeland security” is more like NOAA storm tracking, obscene amounts of coffee for the response workers, and AmeriCorps NCCC/FEMAcorps.

My daughter just spent the year helping disaster survivors in Florida and California with FEMACorps and she just got shitcanned by DOGE as well. I guess they can’t stand the idea that we should cultivate mission driven young people dedicated to public service.

My daughter's service in FEMACorps abruptly ended yesterday too. She and her team drove more than 30k miles around the US, supporting disaster survivors. At each deployment, she grew more committed to civil service and grew a deeper connection to her fellow Americans. Just pointless destruction.

My spouse runs a large Americorps program and she is telling me it's the disaster response groups (NCCC and FEMACorps) that have been cut. Fingers crossed (ugggghhh)

FEMACorps is also shut down. My daughter spent the year working directly with disaster survivors in Florida and CA and had only a month to go in her term.

I can't wait until a hurricane hits GA/FL/AL/MS/LA/TX and none of the expected FEMAcorps teams are available for the GQPer governors to use as free labor and have to pay people state money to do the same job they used to get for free.

When I was with FEMA, I used to work closely with FEMACorps members. They were hard working, caring, ambitious, and provided an energy and enthusiasm to response activities that elevated everyone’s game.

FEMACorps volunteers help individual disaster survivors navigate a complicated system to get the aid their taxes pay for. They live out of a duffel bag for a year and are given SNAP benefits for food and work 6 days a week. The program abruptly ended one month from the end of their term.
