#Exteroception
Are some people more their bodies than others ? A question inspired by a quote from #IrisMurdoch. Short answer, yes ! See #interoception & #exteroception. A talk I gave at the wonderful @royalsociety.org symposium 'From being to identity: analysis and synthesis of the self' tinyurl.com/bdf8kcap

So from my perspective, interoception and exteroception aren’t fundamentally different. The data for both go to the cortex, where they contribute to the world-model. AND they both also go to the hypothalamus & brainstem, where they trigger innate reflexes & reactions, including reward signals.

And again, subjectively alcohol effects of light-headedness are predicted by changes in interoception (and importantly, not exteroception!). The same happens with anticipated alcohol effects, this time measured a couple weeks prior to the study.

Hab auf dem Fahrrad Richtung Arbeit viel zu intensiv über Enteroception vs Exteroception nachgedacht, bzw dass es konsequent neural gesehen das Gleiche ist. Schreib ich später dazu, jetzt work work work

I also think there’s a sense of balance, but I don’t think ‘balance’ is the thing that it senses in terms of being the object of the sensory experience. But then I also disagree about thermoception, so I think we’re conceiving of these senses differently—interception versus exteroception?

Another excellent talk from @mtsakiris.bsky.social, discussing the origins of selfhood and the interoceptive body as the first prior. Combining exteroception and interoception to understand the sense of self - what more could you ask for? 😉 #selfRS2025

Internal bodily signals, notably the heartbeat, influence our perception of the external world - but the nature of this influence remains unclear. One line of evidence (Competition) indicates that…

I really enjoyed reading this extremely well-written and provocative piece on #interoception If I understood correctly, in contrast to most exteroception, interoception is slower, coarser, more compressed, and more integrated. Interested what the authors think about graviception as interoception
Excited to finally share this paper, nearly 5 years in the making! In it, me and co-authors share our thoughts on how (and to what extent) signals from the body map onto affective feelings. Writing this definitely brought forth more questions than answers! authors.elsevier.com/c/1ieTJ4sIRv...

1. Fear/anxeity: we see the amygdala as a mediator between interoception and exteroception. The central amygdala acts as a Bayesian regulator to inform affective states. It sends predictions to the basolateral amygdala, which allows efficient perception. [4/8]

Don't use functioning labels & levels. They're vague & unhelpful. Many factors (medication changes, routine disruptions, sleep, the setting, etc) can affect a person's ability to perform daily tasks. Support needs aren't static
