"Nitrogen dioxide, a pollutant normally associated with diesel exhausts, was on average three to 12 times higher indoors than outside. It was greatest in the kitchen from using the gas cooker and hob."

Cooking on gas?

Each year, about 40,000 people in the UK and Europe die prematurely from the long-term effects of nitrogen dioxide from gas cooking at home. It also impacts the health of those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Urea as a component of frog antifreeze?

Apparently yes, according to Costanzo & Lee:

3. H. japonica can withstand temps of -30 °C for up to 120 days. They essentially become 'dead', while their tissues fill up with glycerol & glucose & urea to prevent ice crystals from forming in their cells.

When weather warms, metabolism resumes. Ice zombies!

Indeed it looks like the investment in upscaling ammonia as a fuel is going faster than demonstration that this can be done with acceptably low ammonia, nitrogen oxides and nitrous oxide emissions.

Another use of nitrogen: fire retardant from ammonium phosphate...

"To protect ecosystems, the Forest Service and the Department of the Interior require planes to avoid dropping fire retardant within 300 feet of waterways"

Bright pink, but the pollution is often forgotten
#EverywhereAndInvisible
When used in fire retardant, ammonium phosphate can change the way the cellulose in plants reacts to heat. Ordinarily, plants exposed to a fire's heat begin to decompose and become fuel, but Phos-Chek acts as a coating, creating a barrier that consumes the heat energy.
What is the pink powder sprayed over the California wildfires?
The key ingredient in the fire retardant is ammonium phosphate, which is commonly found in fertilizer.

This is a great article in #ScientificAmerican about ways that coral can deal with heat stress.

Some corals swap symbionts for more heat tolerant varieties. Others down regulate the amount of nitrogen they give to the symbionts
