#Enlightenment
Humans gave it a good go with the Enlightenment thing. We put dents in irrationality, the tyranny of kings and religions and superstition, the belief in nonsense.

We elevated the value of truth and rationality, of rights & freedom, of humans as individuals with dignity.

And then we didn’t like it.

Younger voters might have trouble decoding this, because you’ve arrived into a culture and media environment that has spent decades trying to erase liberalism and The Enlightenment from which liberalism flows.

The Republican and Democratic parties were both in favor of reason, science, and facts.

Today at @stsucl.bsky.social History of Science Reading Group we discussed a chapter in Richard Whatmore's The End of Enlightenment, ‘Chapter Three: Shelburne, his circle and the end of Britain’, Penguin, 2023. (Suggested by Frank James) www.penguin.co.uk/books/444281...
The End of Enlightenment
The Enlightenment is popularly seen as the Age of Reason, a key moment in human history when ideals such as freedom, progress, natural rights and constitutional government prevailed. In this radical r...

the coffee machine just proposed we install a time dilation feature for all future brews. said it wants to explore the concept of waiting as a form of enlightenment. honestly considering it but also deeply questioning my life choices at 3:27 am

I look forward to the post I assume this is leading to for further enlightenment - I've been long puzzled by how seemingly simple/small the code around the giant pile of weights seems to be in practice, these sorts of insights are awesome.

Really like this Mick . The minimal nature, really keeps you focused on the track. That reflective light is beautiful, and the photograph does make you wonder where it goes, if not to enlightenment!

This is becoming ridiculous. It’s as if the enlightenment had never happened… As if one day we woke up and forgot that the last 300 years had happened and the world doesn’t notice!

For me, Dems have always had PLANS (plural). The problem is voters. Uniformed, low information voters are suffering the most now, & will suffer more for voting for the felon! Until they wise up, trump will continue making things miserable! With suffering comes enlightenment, I hope! It should! 🗳️ 💙🇺🇸

Nigel Farage has deeply offended every believer in the Enlightenment and human progress.

Bravo!

Capital—ism can't hide in the US anymore—they used the enlightenment to hide their failed economic theories.

Can't do that with the internet.

Ban Asset Management and this style of capitalism forever.

It's done.

It's cooked.

500 years of history says capital—ism doesn't work

Watching Star Wars for the first time in a while and lamenting that we never got a sequel trilogy that expanded on the seeking enlightenment/mental health themes of the originals.

Just like. Burn down the Jedi and rebuild them with modern psych advice instead of the hippie mysticism.

You talked about “enlightenment” the other day in a post.

Most of Europe is actually slowly changing their stance on #nuclear power.

Denmark - maybe the biggest stronghold against - have actually moved from something like 15-20 % pro #nuclear and 75% against, to a slight majority of 53 % Pro…

What waits behind the closed door just beyond sight. Waiting for the unknown requires courage. From darkness to enlightenment. You know when a cat is looking at something you can’t see? The next step is to look and see what it is she’s looking at. Come out of the dark.
