#Eikev

Teachings I learned about parsha Eikev, which includes Moses reminding the people (again) that God will provide rain for food to grow, if everyone is good. Many commentators link this to the Eden story where food was free, but at a cost, in contrast to being in Eygpt.

This parsha focuses a lot on food and being grateful for it. It has the famous, and often misunderstood “Live on Bread, But Not on Bread Alone” (Devarim 8:3) which can be a reminder to embody our beliefs in actions, not just thoughts and prayers.

This is our beautiful logo, created by artist and founding CJHS member Roseann Chasman, z"l.

The title's biblical quote is from the prophetic reading that accompanies Eikev (Deuternomy 7:12 - 11:25), the Torah portion that was read in synagogues today, August 16, 2025.

OPINION: The Torah portion Eikev will be read in synagogues worldwide on Saturday. It gives the commandment to “love your fellow,” as well as “to love the convert.”

This coming Shabbat, the Torah portion commands us to care for immigrants
(RNS) — The Jewish attitude toward foreign-born people, who often have risked their lives to come here, legally or otherwise, is one of mercy and concern.

This week in Eikev, Moses shares a vision of abundance & justice that carried our ancestors forward. We, too, fight against what’s wrong, and for a future where all can thrive. On Shabbat, we rest, sing, & dream boldly—fueling the work ahead.

1/ Chevre, this week’s parsha is Eikev (עקב). There are a bunch of interesting things in this week’s Parsha, many of them I’ve spoken about in years past. Toward the end of the Parsha, there is a section that talks about you seeing the miracles that HaShem performed for the Jewish People in Egypt ..
