Teachings I learned about parsha Eikev, which includes Moses reminding the people (again) that God will provide rain for food to grow, if everyone is good. Many commentators link this to the Eden story where food was free, but at a cost, in contrast to being in Eygpt.

Like all descendants of Adam, the Jews who left Egypt understood that food had once been a basic guarantee—but that that reality was long gone, part of a mythic pre-history they could only dream of. It is a dream that, as Moshe says, is something neither they nor their ancestors have known. Did you eat of the tree from which (hamin ha-etz) I had forbidden you to eat?” Hamin, did you eat from the tree, introduced a reality in which food and dignity were first divorced. Mann hu, what is this, reintroduced a reality in which human beings would not be forced to choose between the two. God’s gift of the mann was not simply sustenance necessary to allow the Jews to live in the desert. God’s gift of the mann was a promise that a different reality was possible: a reality in which Adam’s curse no longer reigned, in which human beings would no longer need to toil like slaves in order to live. We are told that a jar of mann was preserved, stored in the aron (ark) in the most sacred part of the mishkan (tabernacle)—well before either set of luhot (tablets) which would eventually share that sacred space was first carved. This is the first testimony that the Jews carried out of the desert: that before God is a Lawgiver He is a Nourisher, and that before human beings are to be commanded in sacred covenant they are to be fed in dignity.

This parsha focuses a lot on food and being grateful for it. It has the famous, and often misunderstood “Live on Bread, But Not on Bread Alone” (Devarim 8:3) which can be a reminder to embody our beliefs in actions, not just thoughts and prayers.

Or as Rabbi W. Gunther Plaut notes in the essays to this portion, “God taught you in the wilderness that your needs could be met by whatever means God chose” — and not just bread (The Torah: A Modern Commentary: rev. ed. [NY: CCAR Press, 2005] p.1,241). Both the colloquial and the common Jewish understanding of this phrase shift the focus away from the realm of the physical. And yet, Parashat Eikev as a whole spends a lot of time emphasizing and alluding to the corporeal. The language of the parashah abounds in a preponderance of physicality. We are immediately inundated with references to our fleshly selves: “[God] will favor you and bless you and multiply you — blessing your issue from the womb…” (Deut.7:13) “the wondrous acts that you saw with your own eyes…” (Deut.7:19) “[God] subjected you to the hardship of hunger and then gave you manna to eat… the clothes upon you did not wear out, nor did your feet swell these forty years.” (Deut. 8:3-4). “When you have eaten your fill, and have built fine houses to live in…” (Deut. 8:12) “Every spot on which your foot treads shall be yours…” (Deut.11:24)
