#Disbelief
Long story short abt why Stalinism creates a disbelief in Socialism.
People can trace a direct ideologic connection between
Karl Marx -> Alexander Herzen ->Vladimir Lenin -> Joseph Stalin.
I mean, russians expectedly stole and spoiled it into smth genocidal, lol. 🔽

Scully: *in utter disbelief* Mulder, this isn't a conspiracy. Your yarn board is just a hundred straight lines to the President. He's clearly behind this.

Mulder: *Muldering at an intensity unknown to science* Scully, have you ever heard of The Federalist Society?

I legitimately sat here for a good three minutes with my mouth open in shock and disbelief.

I was capable of suspending disbelief for quite a lot of it, and it’s got Victoria Wood, Jim Moir and Reece Sheersmith in it being convincingly parental.

trying to figure out a design for the weird ornithopter-SSTOs of a species for my sci fi worldbuilding but hard-sf things are a little more tricky for me. still have to suspend disbelief a little bit though because they are mantis-like things with instantaneous FTL travel, after all

A perfect example of a bit of exposition that works fine in a breezy, campy stage play that’s fueled by a willing suspension of disbelief by the audience, but that feels like it comes from outta nowhere in a more “grounded” and sludgily-literal 5-hour movie adaptation.
There’s a funny implication in act 2 of Wicked that Glinda heard some random Ozian describe her best friend with “I heard her soul is so unclean pure water could melt her” and went hm yeah… yeah that checks out. Guess it actually can melt her. Damn…

But yes, I also think the Joker is kind of a problem, as it asks you a great deal of suspension of disbelief, because his actions escalated so much these last decades. It's just the nature of the beast, superheroes don't kill because the characters are important IP so you keep them, but yeah

1) I experience a range of emotions around what this country has become. They include sadness, rage, disbelief and embarrassment. Sadness for the inhumanity that I see. Rage over the abuses and failures of the gov’t institutions. Disbelief that a country with some of the most brilliant minds is now

I looked at a couple, as research for Writing To Market, and I can't suspend disbelief enough. I can, for MILLIONaire, but billionaire is too far a stretch for me.

Having grown up with a dad who’s a gunsmith? Yeah, this sort of thing annihilates my suspension of disbelief in games, shows, and movies.
Whenever you see some film or tv show with people chasing others on horseback, both sides repeatedly firing the same flintlock pistols at each other...

...just stop and think about the mechanics of reloading those things for a second. Good fucking luck doing that without falling off your horse.

Yeah actual Hockey players would be a little huskier but I don't mind suspending disbelief 😂

Same here. Keep picking it up and watching it in disbelief that we've been so feckless despite the warnings.

My disbelief in agreeing with Rand Paul.
Rand Paul: "This is an insane policy. It's inconsistent. It's not war. It's not the way we've ever done this. If we can blow up a boat in the ocean, what about when they get to Miami & put it in a truck? Can you shoot a grenade launcher at the truck? No! We arrest people b/c sometimes we're wrong."

The thing with suspension of disbelief / buy-in to fiction is that the harder you try the weaker the effect. Like the old TOS “don’t describe a phaser, the audience understands what a gun is” rule vs “here we have the tech that is the reason we really promise this thing totally makes sense”. 🤷‍♀️

I guess to the book’s credit, I did not see the ending coming at all. I just felt it to be incredibly unfulfilling and required an awful lot of suspension of disbelief.

the amount of self contained exasperation/disbelief/shade here is top notch.
