Thank you @mpidr.bsky.social for inviting me to the workshop, "Climate Change, Environmental Hazards and Population Dynamics." I am learning so much from the new research led by environmental demographers in Europe.

i have had a lot of tense conversations with cps officials about the facility usage formula + how it's used to close schools
from the perspective of the demographers at cps though, there isn't an issue if a school is not at capacity
we need a way to ensure there are enough course offerings which

there is a lot about what the white racial segregationist did in chicago in the 1960s and early 1970s that is coming back
magnet schools, for example, are a reflection of choice and that choice is mostly for students with private investment
selective enrollment schools are the same racist lineage

I can’t believe the weight given to this generational bullshit. It’s silly. It evolves a huge amount of generalization. Demographers run amuck.

Douglas Coupland coined the usage and applied it to birth years 1960-78. Experientally, if you were in college or just entering the job market during the 1987 "Black Monday" stock market crash, you are NOT a Boomer, lazy-ass demographers be damned.

Democracy has always been an individualist Utopianism which has allowed moneyed interests to merely use polling and deliberation to secure a phantasmatic consent! Isocracy is preferable to democracy anyway! And democracy just means rule by demographers and parliamentarian bureaucrats mostly

Yes well.. it's time Jewish and all other demographers, sociologists, anthropologists, etc. recognize that Jewish existence is a matter of national affiliation rather than religion. The religion of the Covenant is important to us. It is not who we are.
I would like to see polling results for New York Jews from a poll that didn’t treat “Jewish” and “None” as mutually exclusive religious identities.

Still often doesn't do a good job, and well it's a good reason why demographers need to start recognizing exactly what we are: an ethnicity and nationality born of and indigenous to the Levant.

Historical lesson for demographers: keep it in perspective. Doesn't really matter how much Hitler was able to raise birth rates before he STARTED A WORLD WAR. Staying in your academic lane is one thing, being completely blind to the social context is another altogether.
Three future PAA presidents (Taeuber, Taeuber, Whelpton) and one ASA president (Hankins) wrote positive pieces in American Journal of Sociology in the 1930s about Hitler's pronatalist policies.

Gen X was named after a book that described us as an unbranded, plain-label generation that didn't buy into corporatism the way our boomer parents did. It wasn't meant to be the first letter for idiot demographers to start a new naming convention. smh

But then it reverted back to- whereas the US boom is 20 year. (basically all the other cohorts are just demographers working around the fact of the boom).

“Demographers say more high-income countries would face population decline, if not for high rates of immigration.”
And yet here we are kidnapping and deporting immigrants who are actually keeping this country vibrant on so many levels.

People are having fewer kids. Their choice is transforming the world's economy
Family size around the world is dropping. That choice by couples is triggering a population shift that's sending shock waves through economies.

My impression is that development economists, economist demographers, and (some) labor economists and economic historians overlap with quantitative sociology. But much of "mainstream" economics feels like a bunch of instrumental variables looking for a use case.

And demographers from 50 years ago predicted this, this is not new information, but oh dear will the right wing nutters run with this.
If this is a shock to you, seriously you should have paid attention in high school, from the 1970's onwards, this was an obvious trend.

The United Nations estimates that 6.2 million babies will be born this year across the continent of Europe, including Russia.
A greater number of babies are expected to be born in Nigeria alone - 7.6 million kids!

I'm so glad you're doing this. And this figure is great. the **vibes** stuff seems so important. Reading mid-century US demographers on the US, it seems that they were hesitant to implement anti-natalist social changes 1/2

Causal people are usually interested in causal effects and would want to adjust away what we would call that spurious association. So we would just call it confounding adjustment. Maybe more descriptive people like demographers have a word for adjusting for confounding when you don’t want to
