#DeExtinction
Writing essay on #DeExtinction and found this quote from #Darwin: “When a group has once wholly disappeared, it does not reappear; for the link of generation has been broken.”

The #BioTech #ColossalBio is developing will transform healthcare; genetic disease & infertility? Gone. Monetizing tech is the point, not deëxtinction, but that tech begets designer babies (aka eugenics) — this is why critical discussion of their rhetoric matters 🧪 🐋🌱

‘Biotech Barbie’ says the time has come to consider CRISPR babies. Do scientists agree?
A company’s plan to edit the genomes of human embryos worries some researchers — but it might reflect the changing attitudes towards the controversial approach.

#DeExtinction is (almost) always analogized to #JurassicPark, but the more apt analogy is the @margaretatwood.bsky.social #Maddaddam trilogy; in which #syntheticbiology is used for #Aesthetics and profit not conservation 🧪 🐋🍃
The age of #SyntheticBiology and development of specific purpose GMOs in the name of #DeExtinction, #ReWilding and #Aesthetics is here; it’s good that #IUCN is not fundraising from the private sector to reduce “anyrisk of perceived conflict of interest.”(@itiscolossal.bsky.social 👀) 🧪 🐋🍃
Important topic being addressed at the current IUCN Congress due to recent events: iucn.org/our-work/inf...

In which my critical commentary of @itiscolossal.bsky.social's #DeExtinction #DisInformation campaign sadly merits a subsection; debate is essential for scientific discourse, it should be heated, never be personal; I'm grateful for @embopress.org coverage; sunlight is the best disinfectant. 🧪 🌱🐋

Throughout my academic career, I have only uplifted my colleagues; you don’t make enemies that way either. Mr. Lamm may be a charismatic billionaire, but that doesn't make him a good person, or the #ColossalBio #Deëxtinction #MisInformation real 7/n

We created a story about what the dodo looked like and how it behaved, and that story wrong was very wrong; which version of the dodo will #ColossalBio model their #Deëxtinction efforts on, v1 or v2‽ What if there is an even more accurate v3? 🦤 🧪

'It's just a weird, weird bird': Why we got the dodo so absurdly wrong
The extinct flightless pigeon has captured imaginations for over 400 years. Experts and artists are now revealing how much we have distorted what the dodo was really like.

Reposting for all the obvious reasons: we live in a zero-sum media landscape, drawing attention to this "pivotal step" in the #deëxtinction of the dodo takes attention away from other infinitely more important things. #ColossalBio is just making deepfake GMO pigeons, not dodos 🦤 🧪
A sad consequence of all this deëxtinction nonsense is that this lovely story about what the dodo really looked like and art and science has to include a discussion of #ColossalBio and deëxtinction 🦤 🧪

There is a problem that tech bros (and I guess macho autocrats) think biology education is for girls. Makes them supremely vulnerable to con jobs like living forever as they don’t have the knowledge to see through it. See also AI, terraforming mars, eugenics, alternative medicine, deextinction etc.

The technology used to create the faux dire wolves can be used to introduce genetic diversity into a small red wolf population to prevent a genetic bottleneck.

The deextinction but is for publicity for sure.

But just because we can bring species back… does that mean we should?🤔 NEW Hastings BF essay by @robertklitzman.bsky.social,

We chase the ghosts of the past & the whispers of the future, reviving the extinct, searching the void for life. But what about the present? Species vanish. Forests fall. Oceans empty.
Protect what still breathes.

See also the viral news story about the deextinction of the Dire Wolf, albeit zoologists did a much better job of debunking that one immediately than OSINT folks are able to around CECOT fan fiction by random people with access to Google maps.

I see we’re doing deextinction discourse again, I’ll bite!

Genotypes (DNA variation) alone do not make a phenotype (how bodies look, function, behave).

Even if we reproduced an extinct genome, that animal doesn’t necessarily have the developmental context and learned culture of the extinct species
It's not a dire wolf. It's a gray wolf clone with 20 dire-wolf gene edits, and with some dire wolf traits. And here's my story! Gift link: www.nytimes.com/2025/04/07/s...

Most of the deextinction focus is on modern species, not e.g. Apatosaurus.
