my institution is also going in this direction. alums and current students got a survey over the summer asking us to pick the new name for the (already merged) compsci/datasci/infosci school, most of them mentioned AI, zero mentioned libraries

Okay time to get to work!*

*Work meaning teaching myself deep learning, applying to yet more jobs (need a #compbio or #datasci person? Hire me✨), or working on redoing my gentrification project with open source tools 🥲

taught a fun first DataSci lecture for MSc students this week, and it turns out that debunking "myths" on properties (e.g., bounds) and meaning (e.g., % variance explained?!?) of R-squared is a great lead-up for a stats-to-prediction mindset shift. Hope to have time for a long-form post later on!

Update on my attempt to be a good scientist and avoid sloppy work when evaluating my proposal for large (think 10s to 100M) scale frailty survival models. This FAFO of mine is why you should never skip pilot experiments before running away with formal designs.

Do you believe it’s possible to measure a codebase’s stability with a single number? And that this number could actually help predict future bugs?

Like: “Score: 95%. Go ahead, it’s safe to deploy” or “Score: 30%. Stop! This change might break half the program.”

We've stopped calling it AI at work and explicitly refer to whatev the underlying "datasci" bits are. Done playing their game.

"embeddings", "LLMs", "GPTs", "*BERT*", whatev

When you come up with a genius idea to write bug-free code and ask a chatbot: "Can this actually be done?"

Do you also have ideas that take a long time to implement? 🙄

ngl: "GenBI" / "GenSQL" is "a thing" and it's truly not bad.

Even "local" "GenBI" / "GenSQL" is pretty darned good.

Ignore this at your datasci peril.

FRA-Shield is an ontological architecture for AI based on the Fractal Referential Architecture (FRA) model.

It transforms an AI system from a passive data consumer into an active participant of reality.

Almost everything "new" is based on VS Code, which is a terrible, lazy choice; + almost everything embeds "AI".

Zed's not a great datasci IDE (& likely won't ever be), but it's a ++👍🏼 editor.

So, as everything else converges on succumbing to MSFT, it looks like it's back to the CLI+REPL for me.
