Had a fun northeast trip. Saw Oh, Mary! with Jane Krakowski and accidentally stage doored when we left something at the theater. Sampled the delicacies of the city, went to the Mets black dandyism exhibit, and met up with friends. Capped it off with some time with the niece up in CT.

But I will swear by the following observations: There is not a single, gratuitous camera angle or shot in Desperate Living. Beneath the sleaze and the uniformly hysterical pitch of the acting, Waters is an austerely economical director who is figuratively comparable to Bresson. He is a driven, integral stylist. His troupe are beautiful ogres because they collaborate in absolute harmony with his ends, and are, therefore, not exploited. To paraphrase Rex Reed, Where else would these people go when the sun goes down? None of these comments come easy; they are hard begrudged because to extrapolate praiseworthy style from chillingly alien content is to skate on thin ice and to risk critical dandyism.

The Costume Institute’s spring 2025 exhibition presents a cultural and historical examination of Black style over three hundred years through the concept of dandyism. In the 18th-century Atlantic world, a new culture of consumption, fueled by the slave trade, colonialism, and imperialism, enabled access to clothing and goods that indicated wealth, distinction, and taste. Black dandyism sprung from the intersection of African and European style traditions. Superfine: Tailoring Black Style explores the importance of style to the formation of Black identities in the Atlantic diaspora, particularly in the United States and Europe. Through a presentation of garments and accessories, paintings, photographs, decorative arts, and more, from the 18th century to today, the exhibition interprets the concept of dandyism as both an aesthetic and a strategy that allowed for new social and political possibilities. Superfine is organized into 12 sections, each representing a characteristic that defines the style, such as Champion, Respectability, Heritage, Beauty, and Cosmopolitanism. Absolutely. Hegemonic masculinity, with its inherent misogyny and homophobia, as well as it's fundamentally hierarchical structure, has been as central to the rise of every fascist movement as has racism and religious prejudice. The fascists themselves even saw their movement as gendered!

In this book I examine a series of transhistorical and transatlantic mo-ments in literary and visual culture in which black male subjects can be seen understanding, manipulating, and reimagining the construction of their images through the dandy’s signature method: a pointed redeploy-ment of clothing, gesture, and wit. In choosing to concentrate on the dandyism of black men, I aim also to study the way in which the black dandy figure embodies the construction and deconstruction of masculine identity relative to negotiations of race, sexuality, and class. Because the dandy is a figure who exists in the space between masculine and femi-nine, homosexual and heterosexual, seeming and being, even when not specifically racialized, an investigation of the black dandy’s emergence and perpetuation as a cultural sign of this indeterminacy says much about the politics and aesthetics of racialization and identity formation. I position the black dandy explicitly among other racialized performers and performers of masculinity in order to read the dandy as a compli-cated figure that can, at once, subvert and fulfill normative categories of identity at different times and places as a gesture of self-articulation. The negotiation of these categories has been a major task of black diasporic subject formation historically. My book narrates this process in terms of how black identity has been and continues to be stylized.
