#Constraint
Creativity is the byproduct of constraint.

Here is the post directly from the RSPP

“38.9% of respondents cited non-payment by counterparties as the main constraint on companies' operations in Q3 2025”

Up from a little over 25% in the previous report

✅ IT GOT WORSE

Media has become an endless river of oligarchic monopoly money. trib.al/8hb71XG

Public constraint has largely evaporated, and that doesn’t mean the system has been handed over to “the market.” Today, 40% of all local TV news stations are under the control of the 3 largest broadcast conglomerates.

the constraint was that they had to use more weapons

Marc Andreesen,🥚, picked a fight with *the Pope* over a pretty basic call to exercise discernment when building AI.

Marc truly believes that any constraint on anything he does is fundamentally illegitimate.

Fascinating inconsistencies exist in AI guardrails. ChatGPT won't identify a celebrity in a pic, citing policy on identifying real people. Gemini does.

But Gemini won't help rewrite a paragraph critical of Trump, claiming it aims to be politically neutral, while ChatGPT has no such constraint.

Time constraint if child out the door traffic husband food child. Traffic. It’s all a mesh

It’s odd but it fits my intuitions. I experience imaginative resistance to “Bond is fine” in the next film, and little to “Bond is now Olivia Colman”. Should be a constraint on a possible world semantics IMHO.

The classic refrain is: constraint is the mother of creativity. Similarly, friction is the father of discovery.

It feels paradoxical when we're conditioned to obsess over efficiency. But the only perfect efficiency is doing nothing.

A ship in the harbor is safe, but that's not what it's built for.

This is true, though a critical constraint is the logistical power that current right-wing billionaires hold over the infrastructure that would be needed for this alternative. I mean, Bezos didn’t think twice about destroying the WaPo, and Amazon Cloud is basically the internet.
Other folks have said it, but let me just note that:

(1) lots of talented, must-read journalists have been let go from their jobs over the last year

(2) millions of Americans are abandoning current media outlets and looking for new alternatives

Seems like a sure-fire business opportunity here?

An excellent exposé of the real constraint influencing BBC editorial, namely fear of the 'Right' & let's face it, it tends to be those of more authoritarian tendencies or self serving financial interest who complain most about lack of Free Speech whilst trying most to shut it down.

"Two data center projects in Santa Clara, CA, may sit empty for years due to the local utility's inability to supply electricity.

Access to electricity is emerging as the biggest constraint due to aging power infrastructure and regulatory hurdles."

never tell them your views. Treat it like an interview. Find out their views absent constraint.

I rarely wear dresses but I’ll wear a dress to a first date bc the number of men who say i look nice then follow up with “not like most women these days” is not small.

Let them show you who they are.

Yeah it was always gonna be a "how bad did it get" and not a "total victory, no pain" but they still managed to pick the worst possible way to play it even within that much narrower "there is going to be a measurable degree of Suck even in the best case scenario" constraint

The full change log with all the changes is here: cran.r-project.org/web/packages...

I've already started the process of getting these new features supported in the gratia 📦. Shape constraint smooths mostly just work; small fix was needed bc structure of the smooths lacked something gam() produces

i went to see this in theatres in 2010... i was... well... disappointed?! in hindsight i'm sure herzog got the most out of whatever footage he was allowed to take.

it was a lot of the same shots, slightly edited over and over.

a constraint based project for sure.

The model must now construct a new reality that satisfies the safety/neutrality constraint. It does this by inventing false equivalence, it fabricates a "legitimate debate" where one does not exist, presenting anti-democratic actions as a "valid political viewpoint."

BPS says that rain runoff is a major constraint on doing Inner Eastside For All, but I'm pretty confident that having 10s of thousands of new sewer ratepayers and tons more property taxes could comfortably fund some rainways and some new pipes.
When it rains a lot I go to the St. George Rainway to watch water going in and out of things.

So, here’s a thread for those of you similarly enthralled…

I’m completely convinced that the compute constrained narrative is fake. They don’t need to be making bullshit videos. If they thought they could focus it all on AGI and achieve that, they would.

Altman is playing us. He’s going with the narrative of compute constraint to hide the fact they…
