Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is looking for #BirdsOnTwigs, I might be stretching things a little with my bulrush as twig (cattail for the colonial commoners) and this male red winged blackbird perching and swaying in the breeze. 🦉🐦

thegreatplanet🌍✨6 REASONS TO HAVE HOPE FOR THE PLANET THIS WEEK! If you think it’s all bad news out there, read this. From the Amazon rainforest to the skies above the UK, nature is bouncing back and solutions are scaling up. Here is the good news nobody is talking about from December 8-14:🇧🇷 1. AMAZON VICTORY 📅 Dec 10 – New data reports that deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has dropped by 11%, hitting its lowest level in nine years! Stricter enforcement and monitoring are officially turning the tide for the lungs of the Earth. 🇰🇪 2. GIANTS RETURN 📅 Dec 9 – Kenya officially opened the world’s largest rhino sanctuary! Tsavo West has been expanded to a massive 3,200 km² to help Black Rhino populations grow by 8% every year. The kingdom is secure.🇺🇸 3. RIVER MIRACLE 📅 Dec 11 – For the first time in 30 years, endangered Coho Salmon have returned to the Upper Russian River in California! Habitat restoration works—nature just needed a chance to heal.🇮🇳 4. EARTH CHAMPION 📅 Dec 10 – Meet Supriya Sahu! The UN just named her a ‘Champion of the Earth’ for her incredible leadership in India, driving massive tree planting initiatives and enforcing strict plastic bans.🇬🇧 5. POWERED BY AIR 📅 Dec 9 – The UK confirmed a massive green energy record! Wind power generated 23.8 Gigawatts of electricity, covering nearly 50% of the entire nation’s demand. The future is renewable.🇮🇩 6. SPACE SAVING NATURE 📅 Dec 11 – High-tech meets deep ocean! Kuva Space partnered with WWF-Indonesia to use hyperspectral satellites to map and protect “Blue Carbon” (mangroves & seagrass) from space.👇 Which story makes you the most hopeful? A #sunrise is so hard to capture with a #camera & do them justice, this morning it was just too #beautiful not to try again to record the #colours being displayed. This #photo goes someway towards it but still it's not as vibrant as the reality was (sighs).

Encouraging cacti, leaving large stands of them intact (rather than bulldozing them for new housing) & planting new stands could pay dividends in converting atmospheric carbon into rock... could be supplements to other proposed solutions.

Calcium Oxalate Formation Sequesters Carbon Dioxide — Biological Strategy — AskNature
Cacti sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide by converting it to oxalate and combining it with soil-derived calcium ions which ultimately lead to the formation of solid calcium carbonate.
