I like the @commonhaus-fdn.bsky.social approach: a foundation solely for owning the IP (trademarks etc.), thus providing equal level playing field for all contributors and avoiding potential rug pull as with single vendor OSS, while leaving governance and processes completely to projects themselves.

"🎉 SlateDB and Debezium join Commonhaus!"

I'm happy we found SlateDB a home. Commonhaus ticks all our boxes. It's still young, but check it out if you're looking for an open source foundation.

And being included along side Debezium is a real honor.

Recently @redmonk.com had a conversation with @ebullient.dev, distinguished engineer at #RedHat & council chairperson @commonhaus.org. They discussed challenges faced by open source projects, the need for new foundations, and how Commonhaus aims to support developers. redmonk.com/blog/2024/11...

Go @ebullient.dev, go! Lots of good stuff about CommonHaus, but also the state of open source, foundations, and Java in general.

The "community missteps" section is 🎯. Feel like we're on the right track with SlateDB:

SlateDB is now part of @commonhaus-fdn.bsky.social! I think we might be the first non-JVM project. Looking forward to more projects joining us here. Our experience with the foundation has been excellent so far.

yes that sounds good and is roughly aligned with the DuckDB Foundation model (which owns the trademarks/IP of the projects, including my very own dbt-duckdb)

How is Commonhaus itself funded in this approach? Charitable giving etc.?
October 29, 2024 at 6:27 PM
I just want someone else to own the code and manage trademarks. And I want to bounce governance questions off them Commonhaus seems perfect for that.
