Colonia Dignidad was supposed to be a christian compound, a model of German efficiency and example of communal living. Instead, it became a living nightmare for German citizens who immigrated to Chile with hopes of a better future. People were locked inside the compound, abused and tortured. Paul Schäfer, a former Nazi and child abuser had a chokehold on his followers and before long, he befriended Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet. Together, they devised an evil plan. Colonia Dignidad would become a secret detention center for anyone who opposed the Chilean government. Some say hundreds were murdered. Others say thousands.
