Most of the big "tech guys" are just bankers who once interned as a coder, thirty years ago

As a former certified medical insurance coder/biller, I'd like to say, Good luck with that "negotiating" thing.

I think that means they don’t have a coder on staff at all, which is shocking

I keep beating this drum: the kind of people one thinks of as Silicon Valley "techbro" are so often finance people with an engineering cosplay habit, not actual technologists

Elon Musk was famously *never* a good coder and I can't believe he ever scienced a rocket either. But he craves that respect
the worst part is that for the people at the top "good at math"/sciencey is essentially a vibe one socially codes their way into by being minimally competent at informally discussing things actual math/science people do, unless (e.g.) Elon Musk has proven a theorem I didn't hear about.
I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

you would think that the programming performance enhancing part of progesterone is the progesterone but its actually the sticking fingers up your but that makes you a better coder

Whenever someone calls themselves a vibe coder, I don't think of AI agents I think of @buttplug.io

Very coder coded

And I laugh, as a professional coder for 34 years! (now retired, thank goodness!)

That relates to what I was saying earlier about chess.

People have built these weird myths that having specific intelligence or prodigious skill translates as a general intelligence, or—even worse—genius.

Being a brilliant coder, for instance, gives you zero insight into social anthropology.

Back from IG Jam 16, a 48h on-site game jam:
The theme was "flip the rules" and our game was a twist on pinball!

We were a team of three—I did half of the coding as well as any last-minute 3D modeling, hah. (The other coder was Maniko and all 2D art is by Hoop!)

IMO techies making under 200k are vastly more likely to be renters or have been renters for a long time, while the folks clearing 500k tend to be the ones spending 1.5m+ on houses- as you say, a variety in every strand but 150k coder on cap hill has more in common with their barista than their boss

I've been a coder for 52 years. I have coded in at least 18 different languages, from BASIC to Rust. Out of curiosity, recently, I've tried letting the professional business versions of ChatGPT and OpenAI write some code for me or to check/improve code I've written. In every single ... (1/2)

It started with the boot camp boom, “anybody can be a coder for hire.” Many graduates could cut it, but many could not, and lacked basic problem solving skills and the ability to think outside the domain they’d been taught. Many struggle to move up and go beyond implementing tickets other ppl write.

Year 1 are in pairs. One of them is the 'computer' and the other one is the 'coder'. The coder is giving instructions to the computer so that an outcome will be created.

Seriously, every software developer meetup in the past year and a half has had some clown or vibe coder shill trying to get every dev in the room to use three different AI agents.

I'd love to find a professional network not full of AI fanboys, but I don't think it exists anymore.
