A new book about Sheffield based revolutionary Samuel Holberry was published a couple of weeks ago. Holberry, frustrated by the failure of Chartism, took part in organising an uprising in Sheffield. He died in appalling conditions in prison. Book is getting great reviews - here's the press release:

A part of our nation’s history that shouldn’t be forgotten. ✊🏻

Something that my birthplace and the entire country should be proud of. 💪🏻

Chartism, the popular movement for electoral reform, had been gaining momentum since the 1832 Reform Act. For many, that Act wasn't good enough, but parliament refused to consider a petition signed by over a million people calling for further reform. Instead, agitators were locked up. 2/

#Chartism is an ideal beyond the terms of any dominant group in the society, and is more than an expression of democratic aspirations; [it] is also an assertion of an individual dignity transcending #class

Not too far from Whitby, either. We’ll premiere the film at Chartism Day next year.

I have it on good authority that Lincolnshire is a fitting stand-in for Transylvania! However, it does pose further questions about his relationship with the Cross and with Chartism - we need someone to draft a screenplay for "Ernest Jones: Vampire Hunter"

A key lesson the left doesn't understand, including Sultana, is that the public care primarily about knife and fork (to borrow from Chartism) issues. The problem in Coventry is that the city has major problems, not least two major universities (like all of them) in a great deal of financial trouble

As a slight aside Skircoat Green, Halifax, was a hotbed of Chartism in the mid 19th century. The pub is still called the Standard of Freedom following a speech by the Landlord “The people of Skircoat Green shall join in that march of freedom and I shall raise the Standard of Freedom at this Inn.”

So here's a thing... if you go to the Wikipedia page for "democratic socialism" you find it grew out of the Chartist movement.

If you go to the page Chartism, you find it is an integral part of the history of British liberalism.

Democratic socialism is an inherently liberal ideology.

The cover isn't to my taste but it's a fascinating read if you know the area.

Despite covering Chartism is O level history I only learned about the Newport Rising from my mother's copy

Late Chartism is wild. What do you mean Ernest Jones is coming out to bat for Thomas Cooper against Gammage's 'History of the Chartist Movement'? Whose side is anyone on?

Born #OnThisDay 1792 William Collins, Radical MP for Warwick, 1837-52. He was among the minority of 46 MPs who voted in support of the 1839 Chartist petition. There’s more on the Victorian Commons & Chartism here: victoriancommons.wordpress.com/2013/05/08/t...

Chartism was divided into two strands, those who favoured ‘moral force’ and those who supported ‘physical force’ - non-violence v violence. Again there is a big historiography on the effectiveness of each. The labour movement prefers romantic fiction to history.

Tolpuddle is the counter case though. Massive (peaceful) protest shocked the ruling class. Close to ignored by historiography and a labour movement that prefers violence (chartism and counter reaction) and martyrdom instead of highlighting this success.

Yesterday, students on our 2nd year "British Protest Movements" module tried their hand at designing and making political banners.

As part of their studies of Chartism, students used slogans and symbolism common in early 19th century banners.

Innovative teaching enjoyed by all! 🎨🗃️

There is a whole socialist tradition going back to chartism and owenist cooperativism which has hold the reivindication of democracy at the worplace, theoritically worked by people like Sidney and Beatrice Webb or in the guild socialist stance of George D. H. Cole and those are valuablr resources

Absolutely fascinating. Wade a fascinating figure involved in the Queen Caroline affair, agitation for the Tolpuddle labourers, Chartism and much else besides. Great to see a portrait of him.
