This tree is just showing off

Well that definitely scratched the itch to “know,” while also sinking my heart as to the total loss.

Eisenhower’s northern red oak definitely destroyed 😭

17 inventoried trees destroyed, just in section 10 of the 2013 - 2016 inventory:

Great tip, thank you.

🌱 #SundayYellow At our last Tour Guide training session, Jonathan pointed out the lovely golden yellow leaves of Cercidiphyllum magnificum on Battleston Hill.
I think my volunteering shift at Wisley’s Hilltop is going to be a quiet one because of road closures and poor weather. Oh well……..

The wonderful foliage (and scent) of the katsura or candyfloss/toffee apple tree. The caramel-like scent in the autumn is due to maltol and a sugary compound present in the senescing leaves. This is a smaller growing cultivar of Cercidiphyllum japonicum called ‘Boyd’s Dwarf’. #fairviewyearround

A large katsura tree with golden heart shaped leaves fills the air with the scent of toffee! (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) at Dunham Massey NT

Katsura tree, whose autumn leaves emit an aroma of toffee apples - yummy! Cercidiphyllum japonicum. #Trees #Gardening 🌱

Bonjour Cats and all ORCers ☕

Beautiful day again... our Katsura tree is reminding us why we love it so much... I just stand and stare at it. No low temps yet so no scent of candyfloss on the breeze.

Have a good last day of September all. 🍂

🌱 #sixonSaturday from my tiny garden. There are definite signs of autumn. Leaves are turning and summer flowers are past their best. My garden is bone dry and there is no rain predicted for many more days. There is still much to appreciate though.

After heavy rain, today is set to be perfect gardening weather so if you want me I will be in my tiny garden. We are definitely on the cusp of autumn and I am not looking forward to shorter days. I will be making the most of any sunshine! 🌱 #sixonSaturday

Could be minor root damage or just some cold damage. If it's only on one branch, I'd suspect a root issue of some kind. Maybe something broken or chewed or just died off from some such. Cercidiphyllum is generally pretty disease tolerant, so I don't expect some kind of blight.

オランダに住んでいた頃、美しいと思ったので庭にカツラ(Cercidiphyllum japonicum)を植えました。植えてから何年も経った後、春になると花を咲かせ始めました!

I can’t think of any other tree that has both opposite & alternate leaf arrangement on adjacent branches. This is Cercidiphyllum japonicum ‘Pendula’ with both leaf arrangements. Crazy! 🤪 #morphology #leaves #opposite #alternate #Cercidiphyllaceae

Tree came today! 🌳

Autumn colours look pretty awesome from a quick search of the species. And apparently when it drops leaves it smells slightly of caramel?! Lucked out here I feel

A little later on, before the Wilderness had reached its autumn glory, I remember a huge colony of colchicums as you emerged on to the grass from a woodland path. I noted also a large tree of Cercidiphyllum. . . with its autumn colouring it must present a most astonishing sight.

Salut! Some sun this morning. Which highlights the Katsura tree outside our bedroom. If I had a sense of smell (courtesy of the tail-end of Covid, I don't) I'd be able to pick up the Katsura leaves' scent of burnt sugar on the breeze.

Best wishes to all for a good week & month. 😎

COVID disruptions in weeding at Bucknell led to influx of katsura (#Cercidiphyllum) seedlings + ID of an incursion of young trees. Should this species be considered potentially #invasive? New paper w/ Kayleigh Long '26, Melody Sain, Beth Williams '25.

May I play? And is this gold enough? Katsura tree - Cercidiphyllum japonicum. Scent of burnt sugar or candyfloss from the leaves as they fall in autumn.

Bonjour. ☂️ 🙄

Hope everyone is well on this grey, rainy day (in this bit of Normandie, anyway). Fortunately, we planted a Katsura tree outside the bedroom a few years ago and the leaves are glowing like jewels against today's dull sky.

Ranger Sarah looks at the different layers in the rock. Plant fossils from the park & surrounding area include fern fronds; foliage and wood of taxodiaceous and cupressaceous conifers; and leaves of Ginkgo, Cercidiphyllum, Platanus, a Pistia-like aquatic plant, and others.
