I want to add that I'm safe. Where i live is up on a hill, and though theres a lake nearby, the most we ever get are some big mud puddles.
Chehalis and Centralia are in low areas and much of them are built on a flood plain, so thats where all the trouble is.

Once converted (in 2 years or so), the Centralia plant will be Washington's largest gas power plant--and a major climate polluter. Upstream methane leaks can make natural gas as bad for the climate as coal, though this fact is often ignored in energy/climate discussions.

Although it was a bright sunny day, it felt very spooky. I'm really glad I saw it, because Centralia has been completely abandoned by now and is just woods, with almost no sign of the thriving town it used to be.

Part of the area laid waste by the fire. It used to look like the green healthy woods at the back of the photo. The black rocks on the ground are chunks of coal. One of the hottest spots we found. We didn't go in any further – none of us wanted to find ourselves in a burning pit if the ground collapsed.
