I wonder, why is the agency of organisms considered a philosophical problem at all?

It seems that #philosophy is trapped in the flybottle of #Cartesianism and #naturalism /Epicureanism. The talk about animals as machines makes sense only against that background.
Each generation seems to rediscover the riddle of organismal agency: are organisms agents that pursue intrinsic goals—and how could we know? Our 📕 gathers historians, philosophers & scientists to explore this debate—now available in paperback!👇 www.routledge.com/The-Riddle-o... #philsky #HPS #evobio

Coming up in a few hours on the new #HoPWaG podcast episode...

Cartesianism and women: why figures like Poullain de la Barre (whose name I just managed to spell right on the first try!) thought Descartes' ideas would be an ideal basis for arguing in favor of gender equality.

Thinking about a really old French commantary on Tolkien and specifically how slow his popularity was to grow in France being tied to Cartesianism and how a certain overdose of rationalism had made that kind of fairy tale a hard sell to modern French publics at the time.

“The old dualistic notion of mind and matter, so prominent in Cartesianism, as two radically different kinds of substance, will hardly find defenders today. Rejecting this, we are driven to some form of hylopathy, otherwise called monism.”

Ireland was mostly too busy with wars in 17th century to spend much time on Descartes, though William Molyneux translated the Meditations and Thomas Gowan created a hybrid philosophy from reformed scholasticism & Cartesianism.

Bruno was awesome! But he wasn't killed for his views on natural philosophy nor was he a scientist of particular repute himself! And his though diverges significantly from the Cartesianism that would define Enlightenment science we so know and love (to hate)!

Leibniz 2/???

• notable aspects of Leibniz's critique of Cartesianism includes an emphasis on Descartes's ethics and that he doesn't find the metaphysics "consoling," in addition to general don't-be-a-follower claims
• what is surprising about Spinoza's definitions

Nobody wants to create a rich fantasy world in which the 1980s body-swap comedy genre never existed. Implicit Cartesianism is just the price you pay for 'Freaky Friday' and 'Big.'

until the philosopher's stone first degraded to a literal magic stone, and then sank into the banality and vulgarity of the industrial entertainment complex. and the human organism became L'homme machine. (1747 but basically just Cartesianism)

I get kind of tired of the exhortations to feel inspired and committed and struggle-ready and not at all depressed by national politics. There's a sort of off-brand Stan Leeism Cartesianism to that all: tell your mind to get control of those emotions! Face front, true believer! Excelsior! 1/
