#Calc
Imagine bragging about the Pre-K math scores. Wow he recognized a 2. Yeah it's better than the alternative sure. I excelled at math all the way up to calc 1. Didn't really mean shit.

Currently there are more students signed up for linear optimization than both calc 2's combined.

Not sure what this means.

this is literally day one of calc 1. this is for those who've taken a calculus class.

was tutoring a kid at big time place and their "course reader" for vector calc was done up in godawful MS word. just looked like absolute dog shit

Gonna make this my class opener in Calc 2 in a week or so when we're more familiar with Taylor Series.
euler's formula is fucking wild

「LibreOffice Calc

Responsive typography is getting so much simpler. This already works in a couple browsers, and the fallback is minimal:

--progress: progress(100vi, 320px, 1200px);
font-size: calc-mix(var(--progress), 1rem, 1.25rem);

But that will get even better…

Spencer, is this HS or college? And if college, is it intro calc or more advanced?
I'm thinking that you might have a student who took AP in HS but is repeating (for whatever reason) so they "already know it".

Out side of calc one I can think of ~1 time I have used it. Principally limits are taught because it is an important step in your math maturation to get to those sorts of abstractions.

We don't have a clear a set of gradations. I use Excel and could do basic algebra, but my math ed. stopped w low-level calc and statistics, which I don't remember. Am I "bad at math?" Is someone who finished HS English but is all-instagram, never writes more than a formal page/yr now "bad at words"?

when i was a wee egg i was distracted in calc math class by making my own math equations using my graphing calculator

Pretty long, but its not comparable with the US unemployment rate in that we include different people and i think LFPR is generally higher.

Theres an equivalent calc to the US one and as a country we are like +1% to the US at any given time

My department managed! I came in with Calc II (integrals) & basic GIS, took linear algebra stats & learned R. And still finished in 2yrs, with field work.

My contribution to the discourse is that there are light years between mastering Pre-K math concepts and being great at (and/or liking) stats, calc, and whatever else people consider "excellent at math" as adults. Everyone wants to feel their kid is smart, but Jesus Christ let a 4-year-old live.
I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

I was forced into advanced math(s) bc I was good at it. My calc teacher used to make deals with me: I go to one math contest, I can just get As on X number of tests.

One day I decided we should do a field trip to use calc to measure the volume of the local lake.

TIL progress(). Really looking forward to getting unitless values from our normal calc too.
November 6, 2025 at 11:22 PM
I did the same calc but only used 200 million people as many of the population aren't old enough to take the drugs.

With that change, it jumps to 675 pounds per person.

Yeah, math isn't something the GOP has ever really grasped.

My kid's small HS offers two platforms for additional and AP level courses online. Kid has taken International Relations, Philosophy, APs. Several take AP Calc, astrophysics, etc.

This great interactive introduction from @samwho.dev reminds me how incredibly slow Zen (Firefox) is compared to Chrome. In this case almost twice fast 😔

(left zen, chrome right)
