#BuildSystems
"You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems." – James Clear.

That weekly status update you write from scratch? Automate it.

That recurring meeting with no agenda? Structure it.

Operational inconsistency? Systemize it.

Start building systems.

I don't understand how CMake can be the de-facto standard for C/C++ buildsystems with such godawful syntax highlighter support. Nobody is even ATTEMPTING such an extension in VSCode.

Is there any solution for building software out there, where you describe dependencies between modules once and then can run the build both locally _and_ distributed in CI.

Very non-trivial build flows and dependencies!

The Java build systems feel stuck in time. What would your dream toolchain look like if we borrowed the performance innovations from JS's Rust/Go rewrites like esbuild and swc? 🚀 #JavaDev #golang #vite #buildsystems

The discussion highlighted Nix trade-offs: a steep learning curve, potential for large image sizes, and challenges managing dependencies across diverse language ecosystems. It's acknowledged it's not a universal fit. #buildsystems 4/6

Just finished the last adjustments on the new build system. The engine can now rebuild itself, its resources, or any mod on demand. Windows and Linux friendly. Modular automation is definitely the future.

🚀 Are Dockerfiles Good Enough? 🤔

Dockerfiles have powered the container revolution, but are they holding us back? From inefficient caching to security pitfalls, managing container builds at scale is getting trickier.

Main Theme 2: Tooling is CRITICAL for monorepo success. Without robust build systems (like Bazel, Nx) and advanced CI/CD, large monorepos become unmanageable nightmares. It's a significant investment. #BuildSystems 5/6

If I’m somewhat fed up with the complexities of CMake, what are the current hot alternatives? Assume a not huge C++ code base that needs to be buildable on Linux, Mac and Windows. A fair deal of external dependencies but otherwise pretty simple.

Is there ever a point where this reaches a critical mass of "fuck it, throw it all out", or are buildsystems stuck with this syntax until the end of time
