This medievalist doesn't just study dragons, I sometimes knit them. Just finished this #dragontalecowl

I chose colors from the #BookOfKells collection "Mossy Marginalia" & "Radiant Golden Brown" inspired by a 16thc Black figure. 🧶

Today's TL cleanse is brought to you by a mix & match order from the #BookofKells collection. This order was cash/sock.

Delicious colors perfect for the Fall. The little hints of brightness that reflect some manuscript color pops feel scandalous. 😂🧶

An order of "Seafoam Warrior" in lace weight alpaloop and bobble chunky. A mix of thin and thick yarn that will work up in different but really cool ways. Based on a warrior from the #BookOfKells this is a gorgeous sea breezy colorway.

I can't wait to see how these work up. 🧶

In today’s @independent.ie
I review Victoria Whitworth’s new book on the #BookofKells held at @tcddublin.bsky.social. Whitworth’s study is sumptuously produced and a fascinating read. I’m just not crazy about the title…

The Scottish village now touted as being the birthplace of The Book of Kells
In 1912, a Polish rare books dealer Wilfrid Voynich (1865-1930) purchased a manuscript from a Jesuit college near Frascati in Rome. Now housed at the Beinecke Library, Yale University, the Voynich Man...

Medieval emoji culture is real.
I give you the itchiest inhabitants of the Book of Kells, because even in a Gospel, there’s room for a joke.

I'm revisiting Donncha MacGabhann's chapter in 'Medieval Humour: Expressions, Receptions and Functions' and I am having great fun.

🔥 Scribe’s Ember 🔥

The ms dazzles w/ a riot of color, pattern, & imagination. In the illuminated detail that "Scribe's Ember" is inspired by, a figure emerges from a maze of spirals, knotwork, & interlacing curves. 🧶

The Book of Kells is one of the greatest works of calligraphy. Most people go wild for the extraordinary, almost hallucinogenic illustration, but I also love the script - sinuous, bold, and the work of very skilled scribes. This is a page I copied as an exercise last year. #bookofkells

This blend of menace and artistry in the manuscript with the sharp teeth wrapped in jewel tones makes the Kells wolf a perfect reminder that even warnings can be dazzling. 🧶
